Broody Hens are super-incubators. They will rotate the eggs from the middle to the outside to regulate the temperatures at which the embryos grow so the batch will all hatch out at about the same time. The can only modify it by a few days though, so do not let her have any more eggs after she really sets. Mark what she does have and remove the rest - or you will end up having half-baked (growing) and dead chicks in the shell when she leaves the nest to take care of the already hatched ones.

Since you do not have an incubator to finish them its best not to let her start them.

i removed the extra eggs so she only has 6 of them ... i had this problem before and i hatched the chicks out my self in my room without a incubator but one had a hernia and another got grabbed by a bird ... my hen is very quite and attacks no warnings she just attacks .. she doesn't make no noise or anything .. i don't know if this is normal or not but all the other hens i have when they went broody they made loud noises ... this is my hens first time because her mate broke all the other eggs ... she is in with 3 other silkies and i can't remove them because they can't go with my main flock because of my big rooster he is mean to new birds .. so i don't know what to do .. the only time they are in with the broody hen is at night and in the morning

I put a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in my gangs water every day. 1 tbsp per gallon. It is a natural antibiotic and de wormer.

I have never heard of ACV being an antibiotic. Also it is NOT a dewormer. It DOES create a hostile gut flora so the worms don't thrive, therefore no worm overload.

i already removed all the extra eggs from underneath her ... but should i remove the 2 roosters and the hen from her pen ? because last time her mate broke all of her eggs

X2. It is actually a pre-biotic which feeds pro-biotics and why I add it to my FF. It doesn't kill worms in the chickens intestines but like Trav says, it helps make it an unpleasant place for worms to take strong hold. If you have a good ferment going in your fermented feed bucket, you don't need to add ACV to the water.

I put powdered cayenne pepper in my ferment for the main flock and three day old chicks get it in their fermented unmedicated chick starter too. Only in smaller amounts. I look at Cayenne the same as garlic, ground pumpkin seed, Oregano, and UN-ACV. All these things together make for a bad place in my flocks gut for worms to take up residence. I also use Cayenne because I raise turkeys as well as chickens. My reading shows that some people have seen reduced incidence of Black Head with turkeys that eat Cayenne regularly. Every bird on my place gets FF with all the above additives plus more. When I process birds for food or do necropsy on those that die, I always check the ceca and intestines for signs of worms. None found so far. I don't look as these things as de-wormers. I use them as preventative.

Hi, anyone keeping silkies with brahma?, do they get along? I own only standard sized silkies, but would like to get a couple of brahma, what do you think?
