Silkie thread!

Love your Silkies! I have two, one white and one that the seller told me might be a pheasant in color. He or she is turning out to be a very pretty bird. At right at 2 months he has blue around his ears and his feathers are a brownish color with lighter spots on them. They still have a lot of their fuzzy "feathers" but the darker one has no sign of a comb or waddle while the white one has a pinkish/crandberry colored comb which is just showing up. The man I bought them from said he thinks the white one is a pullet. I haven't been able to get a really good picture of them but will continue to try and post them as soon as I can. These were taken on July 8, 2013 and the best I can come up with is they were about 4-5 weeks old then. In fact the white one is probably a week or so older than the dark one. Any idea from the looks if they are roos or pullets?

I think they(or you) mean Partridge color

She is very interesting and does look partridge. They're cute!
The white is a cockerel, but unfortunately poorly bred. You can see he has a single comb rather than a walnut comb and it should be a darker mulberry color rather than red. The Partridge does look to have the correct comb though and looks like a pullet.

I have come across a puzzling issue with a new silkie. I got her a couple days ago after returning a different breed of chicken who turned out to be a roo. I have 2 white silkies & love them, so I had said I would take another silkie (who I had also got there prior) b/c she didn't have the other breed avail in pullet, only chicks.

I took the silkie, who I was told is about 5 months home. I immediately started wondering if she could even hear- as she didn't seem to responded to anything going on about her. The past couple days i've had to bring her down from the coop to the run; at night everyone else is roosting & she's sound asleep in the run. (I have multiple coops) I try and guide her up the run and into the coop. I had to show her where the water was yesterday when I took her out, b/c I wasn't sure she was drinking. I'm pretty sure she's not going back up into the coop to eat during the day. She just lays there almost all day....most of the time with her head tucked in her fluff. My husband said he raked & weed wacked around the coop & she didn't move a muscle. I let her out to free range and she just stood there for a bit, then laid down.

She doesn't like being picked up, but doesn't mind being on my lap. I gave her a good checking over (for as much as I know about chickens, which i've only owned since April). I did find mites I believe- they're super tiny & white, so I'll get on that tomorrow. Her eyes are quite hidden, so I don't know if that's an issue? I'm not sure what color she is....she isn't a true blue b/c she has brown on the back of her head/neck and i'm not sure what is going on with her feathers- frizzle or something else??? It did seem like she heard a firetruck go by...i'm not sure.
Are there silkies that are just soooo laid back and like to be by themselves? I think she's a cutie...I just want to make sure I am doing everything to get her healthy and there's nothing else going on. At least I know I won't have to chase after her lol

Thanks!!

If she's acting like that seperate her immediately. She could be sick. I've had some gentle silkies but they got up and moved around immediately when they were around something unusual. Mites take a huge toll on chickens. She could be anemic from the mites. She could have some type of infection also. Pick her up and see if you hear wheezing or rattling or even whistling while she breathes. Pull the feathers back and check her eyes. Make sure they are clear. Every time I've had a chicken act like this they typically have an eye infection or a respiratory infection. I've also seen then do this when they've had cocci but typically 5 month olds don't contract it to easy but I've seen it happen. If she has an eye infection or respiratory infection I'd put her on terramycin(oxytetracycline) water soluble. Also by seperating her you are able to see what she is eating and drinking. Get her away from the flock now just in case she has something that she can pass on.

I think you should quarantine her in case she has something contagious. Maybe trim the feathers around her eyes and muff. Maybe she can't see anything. She sounds too sleepy to me. A lot if things cause lethargy in chickens. It could be from the mites too... I'm sure some other people will give you further advise. I suggest separating her as soon as you can though. Btw, she is beautiful.

I have seen her drink ( how much during the day, I don't know b/c I can't watch her all day) and food I know she is getting in the morning/evening when she's in the coop. I haven't seen her go up during the day to eat. I did check her eyes and they looked clear. I will listen to her tomorrow....is that something I can get at the feed store? How long should I put her on it? If I'm unsure, would it hurt her if she'd didn't have an infection?

Thanks!
