i removed the extra eggs so she only has 6 of them ... i had this problem before and i hatched the chicks out my self in my room without a incubator but one had a hernia and another got grabbed by a bird ... my hen is very quite and attacks no warnings she just attacks .. she doesn't make no noise or anything .. i don't know if this is normal or not but all the other hens i have when they went broody they made loud noises ... this is my hens first time because her mate broke all the other eggs ... she is in with 3 other silkies and i can't remove them because they can't go with my main flock because of my big rooster he is mean to new birds .. so i don't know what to do .. the only time they are in with the broody hen is at night and in the morning
When ever one of my Silkies goes broody, the others soon follow suit. Then they are all 4 (now 3) brooding together & stealing each others eggs! Kinda funny.

I have come across a puzzling issue with a new silkie. I got her a couple days ago after returning a different breed of chicken who turned out to be a roo. I have 2 white silkies & love them, so I had said I would take another silkie (who I had also got there prior) b/c she didn't have the other breed avail in pullet, only chicks.

I took the silkie, who I was told is about 5 months home. I immediately started wondering if she could even hear- as she didn't seem to responded to anything going on about her. The past couple days i've had to bring her down from the coop to the run; at night everyone else is roosting & she's sound asleep in the run. (I have multiple coops) I try and guide her up the run and into the coop. I had to show her where the water was yesterday when I took her out, b/c I wasn't sure she was drinking. I'm pretty sure she's not going back up into the coop to eat during the day. She just lays there almost all day....most of the time with her head tucked in her fluff. My husband said he raked & weed wacked around the coop & she didn't move a muscle. I let her out to free range and she just stood there for a bit, then laid down.

She doesn't like being picked up, but doesn't mind being on my lap. I gave her a good checking over (for as much as I know about chickens, which i've only owned since April). I did find mites I believe- they're super tiny & white, so I'll get on that tomorrow. Her eyes are quite hidden, so I don't know if that's an issue? I'm not sure what color she is....she isn't a true blue b/c she has brown on the back of her head/neck and i'm not sure what is going on with her feathers- frizzle or something else??? It did seem like she heard a firetruck go by...i'm not sure.
Are there silkies that are just soooo laid back and like to be by themselves? I think she's a cutie...I just want to make sure I am doing everything to get her healthy and there's nothing else going on. At least I know I won't have to chase after her lol

Thanks!!

Lovely Silky! I haven't read all the responses but . . . can she see through/around her fluff?

Thank you :)

She's only been here as couple days, so we're still getting to know one another, so I'm not sure. When I checked her ears, eyes, nose, etc...I really had to move her fluff, gorgeous as it is, out of the way to find them. I think I'll trim a little too tomorrow to see if that helps any. I hate to, b/c it's beautiful, but if she's having trouble then it's better for her.

Does anyone have any eggs they're willing to sell? I'm not really interested in BBS or partridge, but pretty much any other color will be fine. Please send me a PM w/details, as I have too many groups I've posted in to be able to keep up w/who said what where. LOL! If anyone has other breeds, I may also be interested in show girls, naked necks, cochins, salmon faverolles, & polish. Thanks!

Update: I checked out Lady mary today and I didn't hear any wheezing or any other irregularities in her breathing. I also re-checked the eye area and I think the head twitching she does may be b/c of the hair under her eyes. I think if that was trimmed back she'd see much better. I noticed some hair kept curling back into her eyes and then she'd shake her head. So, i'll get on that today too. She'll be a whole new chicken by the time i'm done with her - happier too...I hope!

I think if I were you I would still separate her cuz cocci can show those symptoms. I had a silkie act that way and I gave her corrid for 5 days and she's all better. But that's just my opinion.
Oh sorry- forgot to add that ;) Lady Mary has been put in deep quarentine- she's been removed from the back yard where my two chicken coops are so she's not even close by. No chances!
