Ok question for the pros "cuz I'm far from one" is silver and lavender the same color?

What color silkie should I get? I have a blue hen and getting chicks in a few weeks after they hatch outta incubator.

plan on breeding them as well. Keeping 2 or 3 to add to flock.

I think you should get a blue roo. When you breed a blue to a blue, You can get 3 different colors- blue, black, and splash. I read that it's about 50% blue, 25% black, 25% Splash.

The gang =) The little buff gave me a scare today, it was choking on food that was stuck in it's throat. I gave it water(in hindsight not a very god idea) and it was then choking on that! UGG so I did everything I could think if, I did a sort of baby heimlic maneuver and gently thrusted it downwards in hopes gravity would get the stuff out, I blew in it's beak, and I massaged it's throat down to it's crop. It's all better now so I don't know what fixed it, but I did feel a small lump in it's throat so it may have gotten stuck and backed up. The crumbles were dry, I quickly added water! Now they are messy though lol.




The silkie siblings =) I think I will keep them both. I was going to keep Jingle the light blue anyway, but I LOVE black too to I think I will keep it to keep icelynn's bloodline alive.

I'm getting so mad at Zeek, twice now I caught him grabbing a baby and holding it with his beak like he was going to mate it as the baby screamed its head off! WTH! Doesn't he know their still baby's, Dorothy the first one. Hatched will be 2 months old tomorrow. I yelled at him and he stopped and looked at me like what? I wasn't doing any thing. I just don't know what to do, I don't have any place to separate him. Anybody else have this problem?

Twice I have found dead chicks in morning where they got beaks caught in mama hens bottom feathers. The last one was almost 3 weeks old. I gave the one hen a bath and conditionered her bottom. But, with weather change not sure good idea to do other one. Should I cut bottom feathers or chance the bath? Is this common?

How cold hardy are Silkies? This is my first winter having them. I also have a sizzle. Is there anything I need to do extra for it?

It may be a dominance thing, and yes - I have had one of my boys do that to the younger ones. I yelled at him too...

I have not had any of that, but I have heard of them getting caught in the feathers. Some chicks it was around their neck - some by the feet - usually they make a commotion and the hen moves to see what the problem is. Can you just trim the feathers so they aren't so fluffy? I think its usually the matting that catches the chicks, but some birds have really curly silkied feathers.

I have had my Silkies for about two years now, last year they were out foraging in the snow. However we don't get much snow so I would say as long as they have a place to be dry and draft free where they can warm up they should be fine. The Sizzles are different - they don't have the insulation the Silkies have - they need to have a place to get warm. Having the Sizzle in with the Silkies is what I did - they all slept in a Silkie Pile.
