UGH. that chick is STILL not out. I think I may have to help it. it was pipped a pretty good area at 7am this morning. I've never had a chick take this long.

Hope it's alright. I had one I opened up last night, it was DIS at least a day. Sometimes they just quit

well, it is out, I'm not sure if it will live or not, but I tried. The kids will be sad if it doesn't make it, but I did what I could do.

I do have a concern though... I have it in a brinsea mini advance. I have eggs in there that are at different intervals. I have it on rotation still, because of the other eggs. What I am wondering is, if it is rolling the eggs, is it making the chicks confused on which way is up, on when they try and hatch out? and then it rolls again an hour later, then it is down. I noticed with this chick, it was all twisted funny in the egg. Even with nearly all the shell and membrane off, it still couldn't figure out how to get our because it was so twisted in there.

I'm getting so mad at Zeek, twice now I caught him grabbing a baby and holding it with his beak like he was going to mate it as the baby screamed its head off! WTH! Doesn't he know their still baby's, Dorothy the first one. Hatched will be 2 months old tomorrow. I yelled at him and he stopped and looked at me like what? I wasn't doing any thing. I just don't know what to do, I don't have any place to separate him. Anybody else have this problem?

Mine does the same thing to my 3 month olds!

I saw your video Sheeshshe The poor little thing. She definitely looks like she is in a lot of pain. My husband and I got our first silkies this past May (2013)

Sometimes they seemed to limp when they walked. When inspecting their feet we noticed they would get wood chips or poop balls stuck in their foot feathers. I found that coconut oil messaged into their feet feathers get's out what ever is stuck in their feet and they seem to enjoy the foot message.

We recently just got two hens from a farm that the rooster was picking on and they had lost feathers on their head and back. I messaged coconut oil on their bare skin and in a week I definitely
saw new feathers filling in. All that to say maybe messaging her leg would help your poor little hen. Hope that helps. Good Luck We love our silkies and your little girl looks like she could be a sister to ours.

thank you so much for replying. I will try and bring her inside tomorrow morning and wash her up and put coconut oil on her feet. maybe I"m missing something that I'm just not seeing.





as for the dislocated knee, I'm not sure. I tried feeling both sides and tried to see if one feels different from the other and I can't figure it out. if it were dislocated, how would I fix it?

So I know silkies mature slower, but I have a few who are almost five weeks old and I was wondering how long before I can put them outside? I've been waiting patiently, and they're really no bother inside. I just would like for them to have more room. I've been putting them outside all day, but I don't know how they'd do at night. With my other chicks I just put them outside at three weeks, but I didn't want to do that with my silkies since they still look like tiny chicks I didn't know if they would get too cold, especially with it getting colder outside by the day.

Um.. you are not supposed to turn them when they are hatching. The reason we stop turning them is so they can position their body to make a hole on the side or top to breathe after the internal pip, if you keep moving the egg the chick is going to spend all its time trying to rotate into position - and not making the hole to get out. Turning after they pip can also throw them off because they are supposed to be pushing themselves around in a circle and making the cracks to get out - if they go one way and the turner rotates them the other.. ugh.

Stop the turner for long enough to hatch the ones that are hatching, then turn it on again. Its better to have the other forming eggs sit still for a day or three than for you to mix up the chicks that are hatching and they get too tired or run out of air before they get out...

What temperatures are you getting? I am in Nor Cal and its getting "cool" (49 at night) but not cold here.

Silkies can tolerate cold, and I had some birds last year playing in the snow. I think that's what their foot feathers are good for - they make great snowshoes!

I haven't put any of my chicks outside at 3 weeks - but when they get all their main body feathers (silkied or regular) they go outside. I think that is usually around 4-5 weeks. If they have cuddle buddies they should be fine.

Thank you. I know they say to turn off the turner, but then I wasn't sure what to do because the others need to be turned. But, I had a feeling that is what was going on. And now because of that foolishness, this chick probably isn't going to make it

so, I have another one due to hatch in 3 days. when should I turn off the turner?

maybe it will live afterall. it is lifting its head. Maybe it was just too exhausted to try at first??

Well I changed mind again. O went up to see him and fell in love. He was small. They said they got him from silkie breeder like his other silkies who I saw and there def. Silkies. Even if he isn't a dull silkie I'm in love. He is in house and flew up on my chair arm rest and is sleeping now. In case he is sick, I'm gonna keep him inside away from mu hen.
