Silkie thread!

The new chick is up and eating and drinking! :) The next chick is due in 2 days. I put the other 2 eggs under my hen. Turns out she has laid more eggs and now has 3 under her! so if all hatch, I will have a total of 7 chicks.

Congrats Sheeshshe! So glad your little one made it.
Thanks everyone for the comments, at least no ones Roos has hurt the baby's, so that's good.

do you guys think this chick could drown in the water thing I have in there? it isn't very deep, but I just want to make sure it won't drown!

I like the idea of putting all the eggs under mommy to hatch and taking the chicks as they hatch.

And yes, that chick can drown in that waterer. As long as you keep it really low it might work - but if it fell down or turned upside down in it then it would get cold. Put little gravel in it until the water is below the rocks. The chick will peck at the gravel and learn to drink without getting chilled. I use quail waterers for all my bantam babies because I lost two chicks in a waterer like that. I was using the jar and it had more water in it, but they fell in and got cold and that was it - and one spooked and went in upside down and was gone in about 30 seconds.

You can use marbles or those decorative flat round glass things that they use in clear flower vases also. The babies can get water around the in between areas.

This is my coop and run. I live in CT so it gets real cold in the winter. I have 16 chickens most are silkies. Just wanted to know what people do in cold climates for there birds? We were thinking about covering the run in a thick plastic. Any other things I should be doing?
