Silkie thread!

I have not had chickens in years and finally moved back to the country this summer. A friend had a surprise hatch of 10 silkie chicks so now I am the proud mama of them all

How do you tell the difference between blue and black chicks?

this new chick does look a little darker than the other one, but i'm not sure what the true color is. Plus, any idea why it has white fuzz on its toes??

I would guess top one blue, bottom one black. However, your birds could darken up when they get older - so only time will tell.

I would be glad they have fuzzy toes, and not worry too much about the white. If they still have white on their toes when they grow up, then worry...

took the camera out today, but didn't get any good pics really.
this is my black silkie roo about 7 months

this is my blue (his brother)

this is their mom

blue again

black again

srry for so many pics.

yeah, both chicks have white 'tips' everywhere. on the edges of their wings, on their toes, a little on their chest... I'm guessing that it will disappear when they feather out. It just seems funny now.

Blacks that are based on E (Extended Black) have white tipped feathers. We just don't usually see them on Silkies because Silkie Blacks are not usually based on E. I think somebody crossed in something (perhaps Cochin for Sizzles) and brought Extended Black into the Silkie lines. Your chicks are the second ones that look like E based Black Silkies I have seen. First ones were very distinct - white bellies and black tops (Penguins). Sumatras are E based and the chicks have white wing tips and look like a Penguin.. They don't have feathers on their feet, so I don't know if it would hold true there as well. It does disappear completely when they grow up, and their black is very black.
