Silkie thread!

Thanks for the info! My silkies areand about 20wks old andall They really do pile up at night. These are first silkies and no one ever told me they make silkie piles! I just thought it was odd they didnt want to roost. And they wont fly they definitely hop around all the time. Especially when they see me they start to jump around. Too funny. :)

Oh! Thank-You

Some hens are super-broodies. They rotate the eggs in and out to keep them at the same growth rate so they will hatch all at the same time. I had eggs that were laid over a period of a week - the broody moved the earlier eggs to the cooler area to slow down their growth a bit to allow the later eggs to catch up. Thats how they do it in nature. All her eggs hatched within 3 days. Its only when the eggs are separated by more than a week that the broody has a hard time speeding the later ones up and you will want to help her out by putting the food and water right next to her so she can get the last stragglers out without having to protect and feed the oldest ones.

Good luck with the bunch!

huh! that makes sense! Ya know, I did see that she had some that weren't completely under her and I thought that was odd. maybe that is what she was doing? Now I am super curious to watch this all happen! so cool.

My 3rd chick hatched out in the night! yeah!!!!!!!! sooo, 4 our of 4 now have been dark. My rooster is blue, and my hen is blue so we think. she's a funny color and I posted on here recently about her. the consensus is sunburned blue I think it was. makes me wonder if she isn't a true blue? wouldn't I be getting some splash in the mix? so far I'm getting just blue and black. 3 eggs left to test the theory I suppose.

Well.. I supposed she could be sunburned black.. but she looks like the Blue one I have here. Hopefully you have some Blue chicks, and yes - you can get a splash if she is Blue. However the odds are for each chick so you might get all black. If that happens, buy a lottery ticket. Blue x Blue is 25% Black, 50% Blue and 25% Splash.
