I just went out and checked on the hatching progress. I didn't do much besides look in and make sure she wasn't a homicidal mother, and a little white head peeked out at me from under her! That's 1 out of 14 I heard other peeps but I didn't want to disturb them so I didn't look any further. It is 49 degrees in her brooder, but she is sitting in about 4 inches of hay, nestled in pretty good with no drafts. So hopefully they will be alright tonight. Apparently you can get white breeding a white hen to a blue roo. This is the secnd white we have gotten. The first one from the first hatch passed away.

White is easy to keep White. It doesn't matter what made it - or how long it has been bred White. Once two copies of Genetic White show up together - you have White. What you can also have is leakage carried under that White that will mess up your Blue/Black/Splash pen, which is why it is not recommended.

You just found out your Blue boy carries White - so all those Black and Blue chicks have a 50% chance of carrying white too. You won't get White from Blue x Blue - UNLESS your Hen also carries White. Do you know which eggs were hers - and are you sure none of her eggs hatched White chicks? Those other Black/Blue chicks could be from your Blue - or they could be from the Whites as well.

It is not a "desirable" trait in a Black/Blue bird - no. He has a chance of throwing Whites when matched with his kids, and all his kids have a chance of carrying White and bringing that into other people's breedings... However - if ALL the other chicks are Black or Blue - then I would guess your Whites are based on Black - so you can get away with throwing in White and not having leakage problems down the line, just the random Whites. If you start seeing some odd colored chicks in the second generation crossings - those would be hiding under the Whites.

Having White hiding under another color doesn't seem to bother some people, I have a Partridge Roo that carries white - and one of my two Blues carries white too - because I had a White chick from that matchup. Which one it is, I don't know - but now I know his Smutty Buff daughter may throw White too. Just one more color that will show up in my crossings - and will be sold because I don't want White. They will be sold as PQ because they are mixed.

Does anyone recommend a hatchery or breeder in Ohio who ships not too much hatching eggs? I don't want too many ... As long as the hatchery takes a debit card..thats all that matters...and has great beautiful chicks.

looking for black, partridge, splash, or blue. To add to my flock of two. One splash rooster and blue hen.

I may have to keep a rooster and separate the pen o have because I believe my yr old too is not fertile.

From my experience cackle has some of the best quality hatchery white silkies.

I can tell their crests will be beautiful. I have had McMurray's, Welp's, and even Catdance's before (I recommend Catdance silkies wholeheartedly). I would order again from Catdance and Cackle.
