Hmm... I'm not sure... I would bathe them in dawn dish soap and spray the adults, including mama, and the coops with permethrin 10 spray. Make sure to completely dry the babies with a low powered blowdrier. Dawn smothers lice, I use it all the time. Maybe bring mama and babies inside into a clean lice free cage after you clean them? Just so they don't catch it again while you are trying to rid the rest of them.Interesting! Maybe they will be white then. I just saw a bug on one of the day olds, so I checked them all and saw them on a few of them. Grrr! I just had a respiratory issue with my chicks, so I don't want to use DE. What is safe and effective to use on day old silkies? I think it might be poultry lice. I'm not sure how they got it, but I will have to treat all of my flocks.
No I wouldn't use any chemicals on them, and sevin dust is toxic (I know a lot of people recommend it but don't use it, per vet's instructions!) You won't chill them, do it quick with nice warm water and blow dry them immediately all the way. It's easy on them because their down is so fluffy it dries well.what about poultry dust? Tsc sells some. I don't want to chill the chicks. They are in my house too.
That is very sad! I never sell any of my chicks without a friend. I sure would be afraid to put her in with large fowl breeds. A 10 week old bantam Silkie can not stand up for itself against 24 week old LF. I would find it a bantam friend of the same ageHi everyone, I just won a 10 week old pullet Porcelain Silkie at my local FFA auction and paid a dear price for her. I have an existing flock of 5 pullets who are about 24 weeks old. Does everyone recommend quarantine and slow introduction of my new Silkie to the flock of Gold Sex Link, Easter Egger and Cuckoo Maran and Australop? I am currently housing her in my indoor bird cage, having move my parrotlet and lovebird to a smaller cage in the interim. The Silkie, Violet, has been crying most of the night and has not eaten any of her feed. When should I start being worried and should I socialize her outside rather than keeping her indoors. Thanks for any advice!
I am going to have to clean and treat 2 coops, the indoor brooder, and my cochin and her 3 chicks in the barn brooder. I am also waiting on my silkie hen to finish hatching chicks. So I won't be able to do anything with her for at least another day. I could do the dawn, but once they are dry I am concerned about re-infestation. 2 of the silkies just got off antibiotics for a respiratory thing from last week. They are still sneezing a little, I really don't want to cause a problem by doing the wrong thing. So if I use dawn on the littles, how much soap do I use, and when will I need to do it again to prevent re-infestaton?No I wouldn't use any chemicals on them, and sevin dust is toxic (I know a lot of people recommend it but don't use it, per vet's instructions!) You won't chill them, do it quick with nice warm water and blow dry them immediately all the way. It's easy on them because their down is so fluffy it dries well.
You could also use fiproguard dog flea and tick drops on the adults, that is easy to do and it lasts a month. I got fiproguard "comparable to frontline top spot" dog drops, and put one drop behind the neck, one under each wing, and one under the vent.
