Silkie thread!

Quote: When they are stressed (and with all that injury, you know that poor bird is very stressed), they often will forego laying or crowing. A mature male should have spurs, though, even if they are not long. Consider adding an antibiotic to the water, and also something like neosporin on the wounds. Watch for worms, lice and mites, which will need to be treated if present.

I think the chick followed mom into the run, mom got charged so she ran back in the coop, but the chick wasn't fast enough. :(

they pretty much all know not to go out into the run until he calms down.  but, I guess sometimes mess ups happen.  I just don't know what to do.  I seem to be having a  hard time in the rooster dept!  he is about 6 months old or 7

I would separate him from that hen and chick poor little guy might not be so lucky next time. Glad it made it alright. My Roo was always really good with the little chicks he would get a bit crazy in the morning with the hens and a few times I was worried he would step on one but he never grabbed and shook like that. :(

Interesting! Maybe they will be white then. I just saw a bug on one of the day olds, so I checked them all and saw them on a few of them. Grrr! I just had a respiratory issue with my chicks, so I don't want to use DE. What is safe and effective to use on day old silkies? I think it might be poultry lice. I'm not sure how they got it, but I will have to treat all of my flocks.
Mix ivermectin pour-on with an equal amount of a light oil (olive, bath, etc.) and put a drop under on wing of each bird. Repeat on the other wing in about 5 days. If they are under a hen, be sure to treat her at full strength, and treat the nest area and pen with a spray or dust for poultry premises. DE will NOT treat an infestation. Treat ASAP! Lice and mites kill babies very quickly!

Hi everyone, I just won a 10 week old pullet Porcelain Silkie at my local FFA auction and paid a dear price for her. I have an existing flock of 5 pullets who are about 24 weeks old. Does everyone recommend quarantine and slow introduction of my new Silkie to the flock of Gold Sex Link, Easter Egger and Cuckoo Maran and Australop? I am currently housing her in my indoor bird cage, having move my parrotlet and lovebird to a smaller cage in the interim. The Silkie, Violet, has been crying most of the night and has not eaten any of her feed. When should I start being worried and should I socialize her outside rather than keeping her indoors. Thanks for any advice!
Can she see her feed? Muffs and sometimes crest tends to block vision. Use tape to tape up her crest, and baby nail scissors to trim her muffs, if necessary. Dip her beak in the water and in the food. Make sure the food is small enough for her. It may simply not be what she is used to. If she is 10 weeks, I doubt she is cold, but with younger chicks loud peeping tends to mean they are cold. If you know the breeder, consider contacting then about getting her a companion of a similar age.

Silly question... I want to get into showing, but need to get a SQ bird. How do you get your hands on one to start off with. Wouldn't any breeder keep the nicest ones for themselves? Or would I need to get nice eggs, grow them out, hope for a nice one, and sell the rest? What would be the best route to go with this one?

Hi I'm new to this thread. I just bought 4 silkies from the small animal swap meat. The rooster is white with some yellow streaking down...then I have one white hen, one blue hen, and one black hen. They are in quarantine right now. I want to start breeding them but need to learn about the breed and what to expect. so if I breed the white rooster with the white, blue and black hens that is the only color variations I will get? These are my first bantams. They are so cute, they blend right in with my 4 lbs Pomeranian

white X white = white
white X anything else = ??? (and every white can give a different set of results)

He will calm down as he gets past that teenage hormone surge, but you need to let him out to get it over with well before letting out any birds that he might harm.
