Silkie thread!

Lots of handling, and immediate treatment before it gets bad. I don;t think it is as "contageous" as lice or regular mites. Once the scaley leg mites have found a home, they tend to burrow in and stay there. Maybe set an alarm to remind you?

I originally said to dilute ivermectin with a light oil, then apply a drop of the diluted ivermectin to each chick. The person who was asking about treating the day old chicks then asked what kind of oil, and you replied that PAM was great for treating scaley leg mites...
Sorry, must have needed more coffee. I got confused with the pictures of the frizzle legs. My fault!

it looks bad. I can't see the scaly leg mites, but the scales on her legs are lifted quite a bit. :( I am surprised I even noticed it, she runs so fast skittishly when I go in the coop!!!!! I can't ever catch the poor girl, she is so fast!

Well I'm a big softy, and it's going to be really cold here tonight, so I brought momma and her three inside and put them in the brooder. She isn't sure about the other chicks yet, but I put a towel over the brooder to darken it up a bit and put the other chicks under her. She is covering herself with bedding, but she isn't being mean to the other chicks. I don't hear chirping or growling so I think everyone must be comfortable. So we will see. Here are the inside littles while I cleaned out the brooder before I brought momma in.

I have a few questions for you guys. What is the difference between showgirl and regular silkies? Are all silkies bantams? I want to purchase some hatching eggs but want to make sure I don't make any mistakes....also I have no idea if mine are showgirl or regular silkies. I am so new at all of this I would really appreciate any input.

Your birds are Silkies. Showgirls do not have any feathers on their necks - they are a cross between Naked Neck (sometimes called Turken) and Silkies, bred back to Silkies to retain the black skin etc. I suggest you google for pictures, or there are a few threads here on BYC that shows what they look like. Some don't like them, some find them just "odd" and some love them - its personal preference.

All Silkies in the USA are bantams. Overseas they do have Large Fowl Silkies. Where are you?

Oh thank you :) I live in CA. I do not like the showgirl look....I'm guessing the ones I got are from hatcheries then, they are not as filled out fluffy wise. My roo is a bit better. Also I think the lady lied and my girls are quite old....very irritating to be duped but they are still cute.
