Hi all silkie lovers!!! I'm new to this site and chickens all together. I haven't had chickens since I was a child on my Grandpa's farm (which he took care of, or just told me what to do). Now I'm finally in place where I can start up my own coop. I've been researching breeds and I FELL in love with everythinplease don't hesitate to message me if you have questionsplease don't hesitate to message me if you have questionsg I've read and video's I've seen. Thinking of starting small, any tips for a new comer?

I'm new to silkies as well, but I've been doing chickens for almost a year now, and here are some tips I found helpful. Figure out how many chickens you wanted to keep, the double that number. When you go to build your coop this adds a cushion. When I started I got a few of each breed that I liked, then I thinned down accordingly until I found the breeds that I wanted to work with. Pleae dont hesitate to message me if you have questions, I was in your boat not too long ago and a few people were so kind to take me under their wing, so I hope you'll have the same experience here!

No problem and I don't have porcelain silkies but if you google porcelain silkies you can see pictures and see if that's what your birds look like.

Ill google too..thanks!

Rockerhen what a gorgeous silkie in your avatar!!! Breathtaking!
Thank you! He is the first cockerel that I have hatched and kept out of my birds. He doesn't have the best crest but he has a nice shape, and tight wings. He reminds me so much of my beloved Macho that I lost. He has better wings than Macho did, however, and a smaller comb, wattles, and better foot feathering. He doesn't have the extreme chest that Macho got his name from, though, and I would like to see his tail fill out a little more. He's only 6 months old, so he has more filling out to do. He certainly poses just like him though, you can tell he has the genes! His father is Macho's brother.

This is Macho,at around the same age. Check out the resemblance!

Okay so I took the mommies into the laundry room to eat and relieve themselves (so gross, but its to snowy outside, so I was on broody poop, paper towel in hand walmart bag at the ready, duty.) They did great. I think Ashes is just a young slow learner. I gave them a mixture of their run sand, food and scratch to eat, and their water. They mostly wanted the scratch, didn't drink any water, which I thought was odd, but they have access to it, so I'm not worried about it. After about ten minutes, I took them back to their tote. They both went right back to their nests without issue, and Ashes nuzzled down onto her eggs like she is supposed to. As usual Snow tucked hers in, Ashes didn't, but we are making progress. They can get off the nests to eat and drink if they want, or eat from where they are laying. We take them off once a day to take care of business, but they really just want to brood, so room to roam isn't a huge concern right now. Thanks for everyones advice on them. I know Snow will do great. Ashes is just new at it.

Sounds good!

Oh man I miss Macho, the new guy is adorable too.

I got 3 silkies out of the 6 eggs that were supposably silkies....the other 3 were Japanese Bantams. LOL We have a partridge, Buff, and white! Buff: this little guys has a slipped beak.....bummer.:hit this makes me relly depressed.....NO breeding for me. White partridge
They are all so cute!

A question for the experienced silkie owner... I have had a few other silkies go broody, hatch, and raise chicks perfectly. I had a broody Marans go homicidal on her chicks as they hatched this weekend. I was able to catch her in the act and save one of the chicks, who I then placed under a broody silkie who has been sitting on Marans eggs. :( She has had the baby and continued to sit since Sunday. The chick is tiny and I have their food and water in the nest box so she apparently doesn't feel the need to leave the eggs. What are my chances she'll stay on the eggs with baby until next Sunday? And, if she does continue to sit...should I pull the chick she has while the other babies are actually hatching until they have a chance to rest and dry so they aren't getting trampled by their sister who would be a week older by then? Thank you for your input!! Silkies really are the best mothers!!! ;)
