How heavy's the foot feathering? Crosses with breeds without leg feathering usually have only a small amount of leg fuzz as chicks, compared to pure silkies. It looks like a silkie to me. I guess a sure way to be sure is to wait for the wing feathers to come in.
Any guesses?
If its pure its sired by a blue partridge and momma is blue or splash.
If its not pure its sired by Chocolate orp and momma is blue.
It has all characteristics of a silkie, just washed out.
He's really poofy already for 6 months old- beauty!
It snowed 5 inches yesterday, then sleeted for hours to create an inch thick crust of ice. I opened the doors to see if the silkies wanted to explore any, but the only one that exited was this cockerel. He immediately jumped around like a fool as soon as his feet touched the snow (thinke floor is lava!) until he hopped up on this brick next to the shovel, and there he sat, sulking, until I picked him up and placed him back into the pen. They don't appreciate this cold white stuff that is quickly turning to slush. This white snow definitely shows up their dirtiness. He's 6 months old and hasn't ever had a bath, and it shows haha.
These two new chicks have taken the cold weather and snow well. They live out with the rest of the silkies in the coop, and they get along just fine. Mama hen has done a good job of keeping them warm in this snowy, cold weather.
I know this thread started a few years ago. But I am new and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Meg. My husband and I adopted 4 Silkies from a family friend who raises Silkies. We have had them for a few weeks now and they are such a joy. I have never raised chickens. I grew up on a ranch and only worked with horses, cows, goats and camels even. But no birds. A whole new world.I am enjoying my new babies. I am pretty sure I have 3 hens and 1 roo. Maybe 2 hens 2 roos.
Kidding - we love the eggs we get from our Silkies. They are very productive when laying 5-6 eggs each per week at 1.25 oz! Of course once they get broody it could be 4-6 weeks before they start laying again. But that's ok - the little dears deserve a rest after so many eggs. Peculiar li'l darling's & the extra toe thing just makes them pet rather than show quality - I'm a stickler about breeding deformities/disqualifications to pass on to future offspring but to each his own. I think it's getting a little too common w/breeders cranking out the deformities to get just 1 SQ chick but again that's just me again. Enjoy your Silkies - they are the BEST bantam in the world for so-o-o many reasons: cold hardy, heat tolerant, big eggs for bantam size, good temperament, busy foragers, easily handled but don't grab them from the side-back where the reproductive eggs form, they jump high up to 4' feet even if they don't fly, less skittish if vision is clear, broody mommas to any egg under them, fiercely protective for a gentle momma even to ducklings she hatches, talkative, love to dust-bathe, easily handled, not vicious even when removing eggs from under them, etc - you get the picture - absolutely the best bantam ever. The only drawback is care of the feathered legs, & nail trimming as their toenails can curl badly during brooding if not tended to. Enjoy your flock!
