How old are silkies when they start laying eggs. I have two girls that are going on 5 months old. Cannot wait until they start laying eggs..

Hi everyone, can anyone advise what color this chick is? Day old who hatched from a black showgirl roo and buff hen. Uniform color, looks gray to me?

It's hard to say how they will feather out, but I've had 2 that were lighter but have turned almost black.

They have a blue/ black bearded mum and a red partridge roo, and both are now looking black.

You should be getting eggs any day now, unless the weather is too cold. Just remember to collect them everyday, cause to a Silkie 1 egg is breakfast and 2 eggs is an invitation to brood.

Ok, thanks I will remember that...

Right now they are in the house in a pen because of the weather. Should I put a nest box in the pen with them? Again thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the reply and pics! I'm always excited to get baby showgirls, my roo has thrown buff and black showgirls before but not this shade. Can't wait to see how she feathers out.

Yes I would provide somewhere for them to lay.

Have no idea what the "normal" is but both my Black & Partridge pullets began laying at approximately 6 months.
