Silkie thread!

Karen Epperson- remember saying that you wanted my culls? Do I have a doozy for you! Totally not expecting you to take him! I've had this guy for about 3 months. He is the fattest Silkie I think there ever was (mine are all on the thin side). He's fat, grouchy (flogs a little). He doesn't mate. He's old. Don't know how old. He has spurs as long as his toes. AND- the poor thing got totally scalped when he somehow managed to get with another Silkie roo. I'm willing to bet he started it. His name is "Tubbs", but he doesn't care what you call him. This pic is AFTER I cleaned the blood off. He's on antibiotics at the moment, so this doesn't get infected.

The 'before" pic is terrible. Here also is a pic of him with his feathers on his head (he looks like a fat, fluffy vulture now).

Sounds like my boy! Though he's not nearly as bad as you say Tubbs is, he sounds just like him.

One Buff Leghorn I have doesn't have white OR red lobes but golden earlobes and she lays tinted because in her founding history Buff Rock and Buff Minorca were some of the breeds used to get the Buff color for the Buff Leghorn. My understanding is that a show breeder has successfully created the Buff Leghorn to lay a truly white egg now just like the other well-known Leghorn varieties. There are even bantam Buff Leghorn breeders too. My girl is a solid Golden Girl from her head, eyes, lobes, beak, body, legs, feet, down to her toenails. The only color not Buff on her is a red medium comb and red wattles. She's quite a striking golden buff and so rare to have a Buff Leghorn hen - she has a calmer personality than the skittish White Legs too. Plus, she's a fantastic prolific layer just like Leghorns are famous for.

Let us know eventually how your blue-egg project turns out. Hope you're finding homes for the chickens rejected in your breeding program or usefully using them as table meat which would be more humane than turning them loose somewhere or giving them away as food for someone else's table - Smiles I used to think it cruel to eat your own raised chickens until I realized it's more humane to quickly dispatch them to your own freezer than turn them away to some unknown future. It took me a long time to get to that thinking but my friends and I realized it's easy to get overrun with chickens if we don't make some hard choices to cull. ok guys here is one of my splash silkies i got last week .. the other has a 6th toe but looks like this one this one has the 5 toes , purple skin doesnt appear to have split wing ( in my uneducated opinion) i dont know if this is a hen or roo its 4 months old .. my youngest son is attempting to show a silkie this year , so whats you guys opinion on this one ( for as good as pics can tell) .. the first one is its tail ..lol

One way to find out how good it is: Enter him/her in the show but it looks like a pullet to me since there isn't a huge cushion comb showing in the pics. Beautiful bird! The youngsters are always so gorgeous.

Agreed! The boys are exceptionally gorgeous!

The boys did turn out really nice. Sadly I lost my best pullet from this hatch. She looked a lot like the pullet in BuckNBark Farm's avatar.

Karen Larson said that she had never seen a Silkie fight like that. Also- "Toffee" the girl in the avatar, might become a mom on March 5th (my b'day). The eggs go into lock-down tomorrow! I'm going to grow this group out, see who I'm keeping.

I didn't know Silkies could be that aggressive with each other! My one boy with all the orange in his crest sure can bite hard! He is ready to breed and grabs the girls and me and hangs on!

Oooh, I am so jealous!!! Lucky you! I can't wait until mine start laying. Those boys are sure ready, but the girls are know wheres near. So neat that they are due on your birthday!

Make sure it's getting some vitamins. Poly vi sol with out iron or a good chick vitamin packet.
