does anyone know how many colourations there are of partridge silkie.

There is just one 'standard of perfection' for partridge silkies, but I've seen people call just about any mixed color 'partridge' with other adjectives added that sound cool.

Ah, you make a very good point, Fancychooklady! I forgot to ask, Oscarorpington, in what country are you located? Each country has it's own standard of perfection. In the US, the Partridge male listed in the standard of perfection is primarily black with deep red and the female is deep reddish bay with distinct black penciling. It's my understanding that this is the only recognized partridge color for silkies when showing in the US. But if you are just wanting to know what colors combinations exist with a partridge type color pattern on a silkie, then I'd guess just about any combination of colors exist. Does that help?

At day 18 you should fill your water trays put the lid down and not open again till all that are going to, hatch. That's why it's called ' lockdown '

21 days is the average but some take a little longer.

Oh,yea I know about not turning them after day 18 and we cracked it open adn it looked like it didn't take in all the yolk so it wasn't alive but I still have 4 more left(due different time)

I doubt I'll be logging in again. I feel like my posts in this forum get ignored, so I'll be looking for greener pastures. I know I'm not on here much, don't have show-quality silkies, and am not one of the "popular" silkie owners, but I feel like I'm invading some kind of clique whenever I post here. In fact, I feel invisible a lot of the time. I want to be somewhere where I can talk about silkies, show off my chicks like others do and get opinions on them (I get no comments, other "popular" people get tons), and get questions answered. I apologize for trying to be in your exclusive club. Had I known you had to be an accepted member of that special silkie club to be acknowledged here, I would have never joined. Good luck with your flocks.

Hi Urchin - know what you mean about the posts. Sometimes someone posts a question, some dialogue may or may not go on about it, and then there's no resulting solution post so you're left hanging. Sometimes I don't answer a post simply because I have no knowledge or solution re the problem except to say hey I read your post but can't help you. That kind of answer is not really helpful either. Someday I'll read the over 4000 pgs on this thread to see what I have missed from the past LOL!

I notice that people who don't get a reply will post the question again in which case it may finally catch someone's knowledgeable attention. I am not a breeder, not a show entrant, nor have extensive knowledge of chicken ailments, yet I find there are some little things I can share and learn little things from things others have shared on BYC. No, we're not all show breeder snobs as I can verify from my little 4-hen backyard flock - Smiles

I had to move my house silkies pen into the basement from the mudroom since the heater out there broke. It's 28 degrees F out in that room now and the three-month-old chicks have never experienced anything colder than about 60 degrees F. They're living on fleece on a tile floor now and my husband doesn't exactly want me putting wood chips (he hates the smell) or sand down in his man cave that he temporarily gave up until its warmer. So, I'm looking for options for entertainment. They were on sand in their previous pen. I'd scatter scratch in it for them to find and they could dust bathe. They spent all day just foraging in that sand like chickens do. Well, it's hard to dust bathe and scratch on fleece, unfortunately. Nor can I hide bits of food in it for them to dig up. They've tried foraging behaviors, but I've found when I observe them, they're just sitting or standing around if they don't happen to be eating. I don't want them to get bored. I've found they like pecking those little plastic golf balls around and the kids put a parrot toy in there that's way too big for our parakeets to play with in there they enjoy throwing and kicking it around. What else could I do to make sure they're entertained? How about hay to scratch in? I've heard it can cause crop impaction, but will a little bit at a time be safe?

Sounds like you are managing them pretty well. I've had our Silkies inhouse in the living room in a 4x4' kennel with plastic underneath and newspaper over it and changed the paper 1 to 2x a day. I posted about this earlier on this Silkie thread but try to find it now in over 4000 pages LOL. I guess newspaper is not recommended for chicks but it worked well for our 2 and 3 month old juveniles when we ordered them and had to quarantine them for a month before introducing to the outdoor flock. We like the newspaper to roll up and throw away with the poop and feed droppings. However there were times when the pullets loved to scratch and shred the paper. It was fun for them but a mess for us! Gotta do what you gotta do but realize it's only a temporary messy situation. Just like caring for any other inhouse pets like parrots, dogs, cats, bunnies, etc.

What colour is my Roo please? Is he classed as a Buff or Partridge? His chicks are chipmunk if that helps.










I know he has too much tail fluff but he is sweet to his girls and me.

Never too much tail fluff in my opinion. I can't help much on the color. Partridge? Pretty Boy. Pam Pittman
