Silkie thread!

I am sooooo mad this morning and sad at the same time. My red frizzled silkie roo that I have babies all winter was killed by the geese yesterday while I was gone. Somehow he got under or thru the wire that separated them and into the geese pen. Then he was left at the non-mercy of the geese. Those geese are gone tomorrow. I"m loading them up in my car in a cage and driving them to the sale and if they sell for a dime they are gone. I am soooo angry at them about this. I have to find out how he got in there so it don't happen again because I just put him and 4 new girls and his existing girl out in that pen 2 days ago. He's been inside all winter due to an eye issue he had. He was so friendly and loved to be groomed. He wasn't crazy about getting his eye cleaned out but he handled it. Nothing like if any of the others just developed it. I had cleaned his eye out 2 to 3 times a week since he was a week old and putting eye drops in it. Even took him to the vet over it. He was just beautiful. He only got to enjoy the outdoors a few days his entire life. My grandson has a crash on his bicycle yesterday and I was at the ER till 10:00pm last night. That place is always packed at night because of those that don't have insurance. Of course a little boy with a possibly broken finger isn't high priority so we waited a long time. My baby was alive when I left so this all happened when nobody was there to save him.
I'm sooo sorry! Thats terrible and I know how you feel :( I had a cochin hen when I was younger and she was so dear to me. We had a dog tied up in the corner of the yard at the time. I didnt like it but my parents were just looking for an excuse to get rid of him. I really liked the dog though. This hen never went anywhere near the dog so I didnt think to worry about anything. One day I come outside, calling her and she was nowhere in sight. I noticed something odd in the corner and notice over there with the dog was a bunch of feathers all over the place. He had killed and eaten every piece of her and left a mess of feathers. I was furious, sad, mad at myself and the dog. Once I cooled down I was going to try to forgive the dog but noticed the dog had already disapeared. That was the excuse my parents needed to get rid of it I guess. I will never make that mistake again. I know how hard it is to loose one of your favorite chickens. Ive lost two in my childhood and both were an "only" chicken and very spoiled rooten and loved, even slept in the house in my room lol. Im glad you got some off spring from him. :)

I have 5 Silkies and one Sizzle.. They are about 2 months old. I know I cant put them in my coop with my big girls....but I wanted to know if silkies needed anything specific in their coop? I have heard they dont roost and I have heard that they wont get out of the rain so I need a roof covering their whole enclosure... Thoughts? PS: We are located in Florida.

Mine roost about 3feet off the ground, but I have supplied ladders for them to get up there.
When it rains I have to lock mine in their run because they get wet to the bone . Too many times I have had to towel dry a Silkie.

That is a good idea with the ladders, do you have any pics of the ladders at all? am just building my coop and am open to all ideas... thanks!

Not sure if these are clear enough but I was looking over my buff chicks leg that she's limping on trying to look for anything that might explain why she wont use it, and I noticed that her thigh area above the hock feels thicker then the other side and when I spread the fur out of the way I saw a weird white bump right there. I have no idea what im looking at so I took pics. I want to say it was kinda squishy but I didnt want to put too much pressure on it. Any ideas what this could be?

After I went in the juvie pen I saw my roo right away. He was fine and had his girls in the corner and he was standing in front of them as if protecting them. My porcelain pullet was missing. The chicken was so messed up I just assumed it was my roo from what feathers where left on it. I"m still mad at the geese because that was the last pullet I had from 6 chicks I bought back in october. I have 2 roos left from those 6 and one has a badly crooked and cross beak. The other I managed to save twice over the winter from sickness. I found where the pullet got into the goose run and I don't have time to fix it properly today so I locked the juvies up in their pen till tomorrow afternoon when I get back from selling the geese. I'll let them out when I get back and fix the wire. I have eggs from the geese that ill incubate and I plan to raise them with any orp chicks that hatch so hopefully they will be used to them and I'll make them friendly to people too. These geese I got as adults.
