Silkie thread!

New to the Silkie club

I bought four Silkie bantams. I think they are bantams. So cute and couldn't resist the orange one with black dots on her head. I hope they are all girls.

Just drove an hour and a half to pick up this little guy. Our current roo was.. very.. very large and very mean.
Here's to hoping he'll be a little easier to handle! lol He already hasn't tried to eat us, so that's a definite plus.

Thanks. I've got Poly here, so I can give her a drop. I have drench also if needed. I actually thought about that tonight. I just got busy and forgot. She is very serious about her job. Even in the evenings when I take her off to poo she is anxious and wants right back on her eggs. She is definitely different. :) She is in the house with us, so I can keep an eye on her. She has a whole room to herself in her rubbermaid tote, so she isnt scared, she seems content, just very serious. lol

The little Silkies are serious broodies. I have one that insists on the full 3 weeks to sit in a nest (no eggs - we have no roo). We give her water and take her out at least 3x a day. They love to drop that one big poo they've been storing up, go take a quick dirt bathe, nibble at the grass and feed and rush back to the empty nest. We have to make sure to collect eggs layed so she doesn't try to set them. Another Silkie thinks it's a vacation to sit broody in a box. She gets excited to see the nestbox door open to see what treat we have for her - she's our chow hound and no broody job is getting between her and her treats - she loves the Poly-Vi-Sol and would drink a whole dropperful if we let her but she gets just ONE drop. When we take her out she goes through the same routine like the other Silkie.

Broody appetites are very minimal and even their favourite treats can get ignored they are so serious about getting back to the imaginary nest. I currently have a Buff Leghorn that suddenly went broody so this is a new experience with a different breed. I thought being a LF she'd be nasty as a broody but she is just as sweet as the Silkies about her serious job sitting on an imaginary nest and let's us take her out a few times a day to drink, eat, and dust-bathe. I understand some LF can really peck hard if disturbed in their nest but so far haven't had one of those yet.

In our first backyard year we tried to break the broodies by having them sleep in a cage in the house rather than in the coop, or place them in some cool water on a hot day, or close up the coop door - but in the end it seemed crueler than just to let nature takes its course and let them have their 3 week broody time. It's what nature intended for their bodies and we stopped interfering with it. I think about raising our children and our chickens and wonder how they ever survived our experimental parenting of them LOL.

^^ experimental parenting! Lol!
I say that all the time. We have 4 boys and I tell the oldest, jokingly "You are my practice child" haha!

Poor sweet chickens are the same. I am learning a lot from this first little flock I have.

Anyone in the middle tn area looking for day old white silkie chicks. I have 6 reserved at the local feed store that I don't want. I would like other colors so I'm gonna pass on these. They are 2.50 a piece. Let me know

Newby question here one of my silkie chicks keeps getting pasty but. I clean her daily. How can I keep it from happening. She will be a wk old tomorrow.

You can also add a little bit of plain yogurt to her food, or other probiotic. Not sugar free stuff, it's dangerous to dogs, so I don't let any of the the other animals have it. You can add a little cooking oil to it's bottom to make it not stick. I wouldn't use baby oil. They sometimes try to clean themselves off, and that would taste terrible. Just baste the little bottom :) -Pam

I've got fertile silkie eggs coming out the ears. I ship if anyone wants some. Shipping can be kinda steep shipping too far out from the midwest, Im in indiana, but I am discounting eggs right now due to new layers, and unsure of colors. They are very fluffy though! Pm me if anyone is interested.
