Silkie thread!

Reposting this b/c I was lost in the no man's zone at the bottom of the page.;)
It may be pointless to pick up her eggs, in my experience I have tried to move the nesting spot of my broodies and they rejected it and stressed themselves out trying to get to their old place, even with their eggs right there. It may be different for you since you are relocating her to an entirely new area, and just due to that she may quit on them. But it probably varies from hen to hen

Couldn't tell from the photo as it appears in the post, but if you open it in its own window, it is larger, and you can tell the bird is splash, not blue.  A bit darker than some are, but IMO, probably what is generally aimed for.  I have one who is much darker, as well as a lighter one.

Oh, and I completely agree, the colour name is splash, NOT blue splash.
Ok thank you guys very much. Appreciate the comments:)

Hey Cynthia thanks .My sweet little mama is considered a silver partridge! She is such a sweet little silkie. Did you get a picture of your little one yet?

For those of you talking about moving a nest. I have two silkies that let me move their nests. The reason I move them is because the other chickens (barred rocks) bother them & I think they are happy to get in a more secluded spot. I have had bantams in the past though that would not tolerate a move. So I suppose it depends on the hen & situation.

Ik this doesn't have to do with silkies but i have this chick, I got it a a store as a red pullet.. That's what it said. Last night she was very weak. I don't have electro lights or whatever so every while I've been giving her Gatorade.. I NEED HELP PLEASE.. I feel so bad, i seperated her in a little container so the other chicks won't bother her but she is still near them so she's comfortable.. She is laying in a towel.. I don't know what to doo

The Gatorade will work just as well. Even a little sugar in the water helps, just place a drop at a time on the tip of the beak. Check for pasty butt and keep it warm.
This link may help .

Silkies and Buff Orps are both broody breeds. The Silkies I find if handled a lot are not mean broodies - you can slip under them to collect eggs, you don't have hard pecks on your hands.

My friend's Buff Orp on the other hand is an overly protective broody, hard hand-pecking, and a bit pushy after her first brooding of chicks - she was almost 2 years old.  My friend keeps her because there are no bantams in her flock.

My friend's Ameraucana and 3 EEs and my own Ameraucana are all the best layers in our flocks - as good as our White Legs. As far as I've researched the Ameraucana doesn't go broody or seldom does. Very vocal birds. They will continue a conversation with you just because you are talking to them.  They are a kooky spooky skittish bird but not stand-offish like a Mediterranean breed. Easy to pet, easy to pickup. Ours chases stray cats out of the yard and makes a very vocal alarm. She yelps when we suddenly appear and she yelps when we disappear around a corner. She yelps when she hears noises or things flapping in the yard. I told my husband that sweet thing will have a heart attack at that rate. She entertains us hourly! Ameraucanas have sweet lovely temperaments and lay the prettiest blue eggs.

This is our first go at chickens, so are the buff orps broody from the onset of laying an egg, or only after leaving the eggs on the nest for while?
My other question is will a silkie roo try to fertilize the buffs?

We just plan to eat the eggs for a while, but maybe after a year or so and an addition on the coop and run, we might try hatching a few.

One thing is for sure, if the buffs cause trouble for our silkies I will have no trouble finding the guilty party a new home.
Maybe at that point we can take on an Ameraucana or two.
Right now we're having a bullying issue between two of our silkies that we haven't figured out yet.
I need to get pics of everyone and post them to get a best guess of who is who which might clear it up.
It seems like every question answered brings up four new ones! Lol

Oh, and I'm intrigued by blue eggs!
