Silkie thread!

This one is a blue Silkie.

Hard to tell but at first glace it looks splash. The wings like silver and I see a flicker of darker blue around the shoulder. If that flickering continues in odd places then its splash. If that blue color darkens up everywhere then its probably going to be a blue.

You say you got these from Ideal?? Or just the cochins? I had no idea that they had bearded silkies! I love them..that would be the poof that you are talking about around the neck. They will be beautiful. All of them look very nice. Just keep reading up on the silkies, and this thread, and share your photos as they get bigger.

Here are some photos of some silkies that I hatched with the high vaults with the ..cotton ball .. as you described it. I am one that also loves the vaulted heads. Makes for a nice poofy head in the future.

What color will the one posted above end up (in your pictures) - just blue? I purchased a blue that looks very similar to that (though her primary feathers are really thick), but she has the white on her chest and white on her crown like that one. Edit: OH, and a white butt!

Ideal does have bearded Silkies, but they will not specify your preference on your order, and only match orders by color. It is random what they hatch, and what you get =(. Trust me, I begged! I had an order placed through them for 6 Silkies for the beginning of June, but decided to try and get the chicks locally to ensure they were all bearded and had the looks I was wanting! Only the Cochins are from Ideal; all of my silkies are from local breeders.

Ok, if you are good with names, give me some cute girl chicken names. I have the nicest looking NN out there..I know it's a girl. Has a great bow tie..and so sweet. She is a cream colored with black. I know not many people like them, in fact I didn't used to until they came along with the beards and bow ties. Love her! She needs a name. Maybe I can post a photo later...looks like rain here though today. We will take it..Utah desert, take what we can.

I immediately think Broadway or Fosse. I would name her either Liza (like Liza Minelli), Roxy, or Bebe.

Sylvester: Back when I was doing the egg hatching and everything else? Yeah! I kept a record of it! And I’m only 54 now! LOL Since my kids live indoors? They molt off and on all the time. My husband decided he wanted to make a feather pillow out of our kids feathers. Oh what fun it’s been gathering a feather here or a feather there! NOT! Our bearded Silkie, Lucy, shook a ton of feathers off in the immediate backyard one day. He got a fan and blew all of them up against a fence covered in screen mesh. There we stood picking them all up! The screen on the fence was for keeping baby chicks inside the pen with momma!

Citygoincountry: Welcome to BYC first off! The best thing I found to get babies to learn to come to me was canned corn. And of course I gave them LOTS of loving and cuddling.

Iluvmychickens: I throw out winter grass seeds and summer grass seeds to keep grass growing in areas for our kids to have it for eating! Doesn’t take much doing. Just rake the loose dirt over the top of it and water it. It grows really fast.

Sylvester: I know the feeling on getting attached to the roosters after you figure out that’s what they are from chicks. I ended up with 12 roosters in a crate of their own in the chicken bedroom. LOL It was quite the noise coming from there! One gray speckled Silkie rooster sounded like the famous Clint Eastwood movie theme! I named him Tarzan because he started out sounding like the Tarzan’s yell! Then it changed!

Brunsy: My first six silkies were five hens and one rooster. Ladybug started setting at 9 months old. I cried out to her and told her she was only a teenager. She’s too young to be a momma yet! LOL

Nate: Don’t judge their sex by their size! They can fool ya! Canned corn my dear! You’ll make all sorts of friends out of them.

388chick: Too funny on the name. At least you can go either way with it, no matter the sex! I always tried to sex mine by the cone, waddles and ankle feathers. Roos have the larger cone, longer waddles and longer ankle feathers. But that’s just my way of doing it. I’ll not explain the butt thing again! LOL

I need some reassurance. My Silkie is 3.5 weeks old and I have a few clues to what sex "she" is.
First off I vent sexed her and came out with pullet. Second I noticed that "she" is very timid and smaller then all the other Silkies that we got.
Third "she's" a partridge and I think she's got the pullet coloring. Fourth she doesn't "fight" for dominance and she doesn't even chase the other chicks when they have a treat. "She's" just quiet little Silkie. I can't keep her if she's a roo.

BTW she was only 7/8 of a oz when I got her. Is that normal?

Ok, time for a little He, She or It.
After watching our 5 Silkies yesterday I'm pretty sure we've got 3 roos and 2 girls, but that's based on behavior such as crowing (age 14 weeks approx) and aggressiveness in the case of one in particular, who targets the two other roos especially if they crow or get close to a food source.
Feel free to point out attributes that may indicate something other than what we think.

I supposedly bought one splash, one blue and three blacks, two of which the breeder seemed to think had some blue in them.
Forgive me for my ignorance because I still don't know how all this works, or for that matter some of the terminology.

Here's the culprit, Moe and correct me if I'm wrong, but would he be the blue?




Here's the splash, Fergus and he is a goofball, but we love him and I hate to see him attacked by the guy above.






Here is where it gets dicey for me.
I can readily identify the roo in the next three by his crowing, but I get these three confused.
They were all moving around so fast when I took these, I might have gotten a double on one,
but here is Righty, Abigail, and Monty.
My Wife is better at telling them apart.
Abigail is a sweetie, very docile, very friendly and I am concerned about her well being with 3 roos in the mix.





I hope I got everyone, but let me know if you see any redundancy and if I have to I'll take them out of the run one at a time just to make sure.

Im quite addicted to this entire chicken thing now , didnt think it could get worse until i found silkies !!!!!
