Silkie thread!

I have the opportunity to get 2 SQ & 2 BQ porcelains. (1 SQ pullet and 2 yo SQ cock bird. 1 BQ 2 yo hen and 1 BQ cockerel). I really am interested in the 2 SQ's. I'll post photos. My other option is to get a few 1 month old chicks from an awesome well known breeder of assorted colors. My goal is to show. Let me know your opinions.

Do you guys think this is a rooster? I heard my first cockadoodledo this morning. I have to say I was actually excited lol. But as soon as I let them out, he stoped. I think it's this one.... what do you guys think?

Hey all... quick question. Well maybe not. It's very confusing but hope you understand this mess.

I have the following silkies...

1 splash roo Ichabod who I love dearly.

1 splash hen Emery

1 splash chick who looks lavender tent

1 partridge roo Roman

1 partridge chick female curled feet Felicity

1 blue hen Lydia who I love dearly

1 black chick

1 blue chick

1 splash with red hen.. I think a hen Astrid

1 porcelain roo deformed beak. Not scissor but his comb also is sideways. Silas

And 4 chick's to arrive in 6 days give or take who the father is partridge rooster. Chick's mother is blue hen or splash hen

My partridge is becoming aggressive to me. My hen was sitting on her eggs and he mated with her on the nest and broke some eggs. He is pretty and is my hens sperm donor lol. My silas and Ichabod aren't fertile. Well silas isn't allowed to mate and when I saw him try the hens won't let him. Which is good.since his beak problem. But it was strange as he acted like he was mating but was mating the ground.. weird.

I like black and blue chickens. And partridge and splash is ok too. I think it would be harder to find homes for chick's who are odd colored. Like my astrid.

Astrid her beak is very slightly not aligned. Which worried me. Also one of her toes is croocked. You can't tell unless you look closely. Astrid is somewhat related to emery. Emery mother is also astrids.

Felicity her temperament is so sweet and she is cute as a button. But I don't know why her feet are like that when she hatched. Her father is roman.

I may need new bloodlines I think.

I need advice on what to do .
Add different blood in flock?

Should I stick to certain colors in flock?

Is curled toe hereditary?

I'm loosing my mind. Lol

I have
1 Lavender
1 Splash w/Lavender
2 Partridge
2 Blue
1 Black
1 Splash
1 Porcelain
1 Splash with red leakage.

Geeze... I can't stick to a color. Lol. I'm thinking B/B/S is my best bet...

But Felicity the partridge has nice temperament but her poor feet. They aren't hurting her. but I've grown attached to her. I just don't want her future chick's to have that.

Silas and his horrible turned Cockeyed beak is not gonna help any. He isn't mean at all. No one would want a crooked beak roo.

Lol I've gone crazy lol

I'm so excited! I have FINALLY added a Silkie to my family. I ordered through mypetchicken because I'm very limited to the number of birds I can have and wanted to attempt to get a sexed bird. Hopefully they didn't let me down and I she ends up staying a she. I ordered a white Silkie in my batch of 4 chicks. She'll be raised with 3 standard sized birds and when they are old enough will be combined with 4 more standard birds. I was a bit worried to add a single bantam to the flock but since my RIR is very small and silkies aren't the smallest bantams and after talking with some "experts" I decided to go ahead and do it. The merge will be a long process because I want to do it as calmly as possible and I am home most of the day so when the time comes I'll be able to monitor the merger VERY closely. She seems to be bonding with the Orpington I got who is a MONSTER. So hopefully the Orp will be the silkie's protector. I also got a Polish so she won't be the only "strange" looking bird being added to the group. Here's Bunny!!!!!

Awwww.

I was wondering about the same thing.   Are layer pellets too big for them?
My flock of silkies hated the layer pellets and they had to smash each pellet into the ground to crush up before they are it:/ made me feel bad so now all I feed them is the Crumble and I mix some scratch in with it:) they love it. I would say just try different things and whatever your silkies prefer just go with that:}

I recommend everyone take a look at the benefits of fermenting feed.
It increases immunity and resistance to parasites, helps gut flora and fauna, increases the ability of the body to absorb nutrients as well as increasing the bio-availability of nutrients while decreasing anti-nutrients.

From a more economical standpoint, it reduces feed waste and reduces feed consumption with more nutrients being absorbed with less feed.

From a practicality standpoint, as long as you mix it dry enough, even one day old chick's can eat it, whether you buy pellets or crumbles, it all breaks down in the fermented feed, so it doesn't matter which you get. Even the fines in the food get used.

On the advice of my vet re Silkies I've been doing the fermented feed for 6 months because we had layer pellets that the Silkies loved but couldn't break down so they kept looking for smaller broken pieces. We started moistening the pellets (not soaking but just moistening) overnight in the fridge with added brewers yeast, cooked brown rice, a little dash of turmeric, chia seeds, quinoa seeds, crushed pumpkin seeds (no shell), and rolled oats and all the chickens go for the moistened feed. However we noticed them eating less of the feed. Guess that's where the absorbtion of nutrients comes into place to require eating less of it. So the wild birds don't eat it all up we remove the bowl after the morning feeding.

The hens eat the bulk of it in the morning and we set out a little at dusk for their evening foraging - during the day we supplement with whole wheat, Greek yogurt, meat or seafood because the protein content on our current organic feed is less because of no-soy/no gmo formulation. Someone in our area makes a non-cooked organic feed with a better protein ratio we plan to look into for next purchase. A total of one cup of moistened feed daily for 4 hens equals 1/4 cup consumed roughly per chicken each day - doesn't seem like much but they also forage the yard all day for bugs and greens. It's been less waste that we may go with a smaller bag of organic feed next time around to keep it rotationally fresher.

Finally got a video of my rooster doing his silly dance! I feel like he is doing a dance interpretation of a cat whose foot is wet and is shaking off the water...
