We don't fit under mom anymore. :) The partridge family.

This little one got wry neck shortly after birth, at least that's what I think it is. She is doing much better on poly vi sol, but cant use the water dish, so today we learned water bottle. :)

ADORABLE! I have a partridge Silkie too! And I use a rabbit waterer too!

I planted Kale in our garden and it grows very fast. I cut a 5 gallon bucket of the leaves every other day for my chickens. The kale keeps growing since I don't pull it up by the roots. The chickens love it and it's also very good for them. The Orps are the only ones that free range and they help themselves to it. They don't bother anything else in the garden either. Last year I did'nt plant kale and they would eat the flowers off the tomato plants. They really did a number on them. Now I know what to plant to make them leave the tomatos alone.

I might have to try the kale..I have tried the rainbow chard..they don't like it! Silly birds!

So my 6-7mth old silkie hen just started laying maybe a month or so ago and was laying just about every day, sometimes missing a day but the last week in a half she hasent layed any. Is this odd? I had her eating the same medicated chick food my babies were on since they are all together so eating the same thing. But now that they turned 8wks, i recently put them all onto purina flock raiser and I think it was then that she stopped laying. Right now they are all kinda on strike and making more of a mess with their new food then anything. Im pretty sure she's not broody either. She seems normal, just no eggs, which isent a huge deal to me as long as there's no health reasons behind it. Any ideas?

This must be Dixie? Are you sure she isn't thinking about going broody? Check out her breast, see if it is going bare. Is she making a funny different noise? Sometimes my hens go broody in a different way. Instead of going to the nest box first, makes the funny talking noise, and I see feathers around..or, your girl could be starting a light molt..at least, you hope a .... light...molt. I just had my bantam cochin do a light one. She stopped laying after giving me an egg a day for months! Never has gone broody.

Ya this is Dixie. I dont know much about hens going broody because I havent experienced it yet.. but I dont think she is. I havent seen her "sitting" even once yet. And she used to like to lay in a certain corner but there's no eggs or feathers anywhere. She looks normal and acts normal to me to, i havent noticed any odd noises from her.. She seems a little more "honery" then usual and spirited like more bouncy and wanting to bounce and chase the younger babies around, ect but overall she doesent seem much different besides that. I was thinking she could be going broody but I dont see any typical signs that she'd be interesting in laying anywhere. Everytime I see her she's up and moving with the others.. so I have no idea what is causing the sudden disapearing eggs, other then maybe the new change in her food?

I had Ruby Swiss Chard grow 3 feet tall and it keeps growing through winter too if you have mild winters. Only my White Leghorn nibbled the Ruby Chard but if a lettuce or chard is an all-green no-color variety the chickens are more willing to nibble on them.
