Silkie thread!

I had Ruby Swiss Chard grow 3 feet tall and it keeps growing through winter too if you have mild winters. Only my White Leghorn nibbled the Ruby Chard but if a lettuce or chard is an all-green no-color variety the chickens are more willing to nibble on them.

We don't have mild winters here. Always get some snow. But, the chard did come back up on it's own this spring. :) I'm letting a couple of bunches..for less of a better word, lol...go to seed. I want to replant and get some new starts. I love it. It tastes like spinach to me, and I love cooked fresh spinach...and chard. :)

Ya this is Dixie. I dont know much about hens going broody because I havent experienced it yet.. but I dont think she is. I havent seen her "sitting" even once yet. And she used to like to lay in a certain corner but there's no eggs or feathers anywhere. She looks normal and acts normal to me to, i havent noticed any odd noises from her.. She seems a little more "honery" then usual and spirited like more bouncy and wanting to bounce and chase the younger babies around, ect but overall she doesent seem much different besides that. I was thinking she could be going broody but I dont see any typical signs that she'd be interesting in laying anywhere. Everytime I see her she's up and moving with the others.. so I have no idea what is causing the sudden disapearing eggs, other then maybe the new change in her food?
Ok, when you said honery, I thought you said ...ahem..something else..ha ha..could be just that! If she is honery and chasing others around, she could be wondering where that rooster is. Anyone? I've heard that happens. I don't know..I don't have a rooster being a rooster..yet. My white is getting bigger, longer legged..but now crowing yet. The knot on it's nose is getting bigger.

Hahaha! Maybe that is it then lol. She's probably wanting some..ahem.. to be a momma lol but isent showing the actual broody signs yet. But ya she's alot more naughty lately towards the babies especially the sweet lil blue girl (I got from you) that I recently added to their flock. She's big enough now that I put her with them and the other babies took her right in but Dixie is kinda a stinker towards her. If I do decide to do the hatching thing next year, i think i'll order eggs online like you do and let her hatch them, that way I get the quality babies I want but no roosters lol.

Purina flock raiser is the best that I can find protein wise and nutritionally for everyone. Its also easy giving everyone the same thing from birth up.
ok thanks will see if TSC or anyone carries it here. worth a try. The All Flock I was using was a Purina product I think, it had that checkerboard square, I believe that is Purina, but they lost weight on it. I pick up my birds and feel nothing but bones. Very upsetting. Never had this problem with my other flock but then again I didn't have so many of different ages, my age range this year is nuts... lol

Don't know if anyone remembers but I found 2 Silkie chicks at TSC and was hoping to get 2 girls for my boy I got from brad........ well they are Boys

So I am still on the hunt for some girls. and if anyone would like 2 White Silkies Roo's let me know, they are beautiful but I need girls. Still babies but feathers are coming in real good full leg coverage and all purple type ears and combs. Will try and get current pic's today, but no promises, we got flooded yesterday and I have allot of clean up and repairs to do. my Silkies and Seabrights had to be brought in cause their houses were under water.

I planted Kale in our garden and it grows very fast. I cut a 5 gallon bucket of the leaves every other day for my chickens. The kale keeps growing since I don't pull it up by the roots. The chickens love it and it's also very good for them. The Orps are the only ones that free range and they help themselves to it. They don't bother anything else in the garden either. Last year I did'nt plant kale and they would eat the flowers off the tomato plants. They really did a number on them. Now I know what to plant to make them leave the tomatos alone.
how many plants do you think I would need for 44 birds? I need something to help with nutrition. my birds free range and I am trying different feed cause the All Flock they were on was a waste of money. It did nothing for them at all and the LOST weight on it. and would it be too late to plant some this year?

I have my juvenile silkies in with my poults. I fed both chick starter. I recently switched to game bird starter grower. When I picked them up to move them out to the bantam coop I was shocked. They are little chunks of lead. I once had a old timer tell me if I wanted to fatten my birds up to feed them name bird conditioner. I guess the same can be said for the starter/grower.

I seen that at my TSC store but never paid much attention to it, maybe I should research the difference? I wonder if it has too much of anything that would do more harm than good in the long run. Sorry I seem to enjoy asking questions... lol I can see research in my near future.

Got the pic's I took of the flooding yesterday. it was just bad enough that it got inside both the Silkie and Seabright pens. the pic's arent great cause I couldn't take the camera out in the rain.

got lots of clean up to do...

Have you wormed them? Also Purina had a recall recently because their bags where lacking the nutrition.

they are still youngins, from 7 weeks to 22 weeks, didn't think you could worm that early? and I didn't know about the Purina recall.

Wow! Looks like u got some bad flooding!
Bad enough. I had to bring Silkies and Seabrights in house till the water went down. and we have more rain on the way tonight and I guess up till next Tuesday. we are putting everything on legs this weekend but till then I have got some concrete blocks to raise them. just hope the silkies will climb a ramp that high. they climb the little one now but will be raising it another 4-5 inches.....

and my Seabright house has got to be compleatly remade thanks to a play set falling over on top of it in the wind, that I didn't even know we had.
