Silkie thread!

It has been brought to my attention that maybe you might want to research the need for the Iron.  I can only tell ya that it worked for me with no problems but I myself am going to research this more. Poly-Vi-Sol with no iron may be the better choice. But definitely use a vitamin supplement.

This might help you.

And this one is one that I refer to often.

Iron supplementation is not recommended in chicks but bio available iron is helpful in times of extreme molt. A deficiency in adult birds will usually show up in the form of anemia or pigmentation loss in coloured feathers. There are other vitamin supplements on the market with much less iron. If you are feeding a good quality feed you may only need supplement when they are molting or suffering with illness.

Because Poly-Vi-Sol no iron is a human infant vitamin strength the vet suggested a limited use. I use it for broody or moulting hens a couple x's week (just one drop on the side of the beak) or when their appetite has slackened during heatwaves. I know chickeneers like the vitamins in waterers but it's a hard way to monitor how much dosage each chicken is ingesting. Some of my hens drink a lot, others not so much and they'll drink the sprinkler water instead of the vitamin water. We just found it more precise to use the Poly-Vi-Sol. It really perks up the chicken too. As for treating chicks I'll leave that opinion to the experts as I don't raise babies but many use Poly for treating many vitamin maladies in babies.

I use the Aussie equivalent ' pentavite ' for infants. I have not had any cases of wryneck. Touch wood , but I keep it on hand and have administered it directly into the beak when someone is below par. You can't beat a good balanced diet , fresh air and sunshine.

I am going to breed my chickens and I was wondering a few things.

1. can I breed whatever else is in them out of them? I know it sounds confusing

Hubby is a dairy farmer and he was telling me that with cows you can breed a cow that is Jersey x Freisan with a Jersey and keep doing that with each new calf and you will eventually get all Jersey, can you do that with chickens? Will that same rule apply if I do that with my new chickens I'm getting if I get a Silkie rooster? And if so how much would a Silkie rooster be?

2. Can you get deformed chicks from inbreeding? Will I then have to separate the new chicks when they old enough to lay (an perhaps new roosters) from there parents?

If you look on gumtree or andy Vardy's backyard poultry you should be able to get a pure silkie roo for free. You can ' line breed ' which generally means that you can breed the pullets back to their father for a couple of generations but after that you need to bring in a new roo. It is not advisable to breed sibling to sibling. If you start off with good stock you will save yourself a tonne of work messing around with ' project ' birds.

Here's the link.

I do have the poly Vi sol w/o iron that I use on occasion when I have a weak chick. Thanks everyone!

I think I've figured out the combs of the rooster. The hens comb should not look like that though correct? Could anyone post pics of the standard for the hen plz? Thanks
