Silkie thread!

Here is a close up of Tuna's comb. What do you think? She's a little over 3 months old.
Im no expert but looks like Tunas a roo to me.
My Girls have a lower narrow comb doesnt stand up at all almost flat on the beak ..almost.. a lump usually is a roo..
My are 4 months 1 week old and one roo has a Big fat nice comb and is crowing as of last week ! The other little less sure...i THINK is a roo too has a little bit higher comb and same side as the roo... then the 3rd which is a hen im almost positive as she has almost no comb and its narrow plus shes smaller
I THINK girls are smaller..mine are anyway. GOOD LUCK on Tuna being a fertile daddy!!

Looks like is my turn and of course its my favorite hen. Wry Neck? I thought she was going broody. Then I noticed she was holding her head funny. She was still setting, drinking, and could walk fine.
Yesterday I gave her vit drops and put them in the water.
This morning she was laying upside down and panting in the coop. I broughtvher in and gave her water by dropper and more vitamins. She can stand up and sit with out flipping over, but still holding her head sideways. I have her in the house in a basket what else do?

Edited to add: She is over a year old. I noticed this after I moved another broody out of the coop because she is nasty to everyone when she is sitting. I wonder if this could have men caused by a peck? I've moved her to a Rubbermaid box with food and water.

Oh poor thing. Make sure she has no access to medicated chick starter and check that the vits contain thiamine. I routinely add vits to the water now and feed a well balanced pellet along with grain.

I have had several with wry neck. I have polish and as with silkies they have a vaulted skull so one peck is all it takes. I have found the vitamins and regular watering of the birds an essential part of them recovering. Out of five in various hatches that suffered wry neck only one has had to be culled. It just takes time and patience with them. And of course not thinking that all is lost. There are some good recovery stories out there. Here is pic of my fav bird ever Poppet a blue polish frizzle cockerel who is the most friendly and tame and just loves being with you. He suffered wry neck but has made full recovery. Hope your bird better soon.

If you are having that many afflicted with wry neck you should consider changing your feed regime . An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

Lovely silkies and yes you can see the comb difference on them. I have found the polish quite hard to sex have put some posts on here for tips had some good replies. I have four frizzle two cockerels and two pullets I think! My other cockerel is the silver laced. I'm going on that two are crowing had have reddened up around the wattle area. The other two are slightly smaller and have no redness yet and are not crowing.:frow

Thank you fancychooklady for the tip. What would you suggest I look for in my chick crumb and grower pellets? I do have the extra vitamin poultry boost in all my chickens water. On my feed bags I buy in 25kg bags it has no mention of medicated and non medicated. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Many people don't feed medicated starter at all. The theory is that if you get an out break of cocci you treat then rather than attempting to build immunity.
Amprolium is a thiamine blocker and the science is in, a thiamine deficiency is the main contributing cause of wry neck. Check the bag for ingredients .
I keep a tub of amprolium in my first aid box because even after they have had medicated feed for the first 6 weeks if you have a cocci outbreak chances are they will be just as susceptible to it as the older birds. It's important to remove the medicated feed as soon as you see symptoms.
Routine vits ( as you are already administering ) and additives high in thiamine and niacin will go a long way to preventing wry neck.
Brewers yeast, vegemite and marmite are also good sources, that most of us have on hand.
