That's why mine get game bird starter/grower. I have quail and instead of buying two different kinds of starter I give it to all the chicks. I noticed the chicks were much heavier and grew better on it. Now I mix it in with the scratch I give all the birds even the adults.

My babies r on medicated game bird starter. Then any pens raising babies r on starter grower for chickens, and any without babies are on layer pellets for chickens. Lol

I feed mine a mix if game bird grower and 3 grain scratch. The vitamins are Polyvisol no iron. Since I believe this was caused from a peck I was thinking I needed to take her to the vet for prednisone. What do y'all think?

Hi all. I have frizzled sizzles that I hatched from Sheri Mikner that will be 4 weeks old this thursday. 3 days ago one of them started shaking its head side to side like a bobble head doll after she would scratch her head or get excited (so not constantly). I started giving the Poly V thinking its wryneck. Yesterday I noticed another doing the exact same thing. I do have the emergency first aid kit from DOC Brown and started giving all my birds a mix of the Vita Por-B, A - Lyte Amino Acid, & Replman. There all vitamins and stuff that helps the chick absorb vitamins. Am I doing the right thing? Should I be doing something different?

I have visited this thread a few times before but I am quite new so I hope Im not interrupting a topic of discussion but I am just so excited. Today at 7 1/2 months old (hatched 01/01/14) one of my Splash Silkie pullets laid her first egg

I was feeding mine medicated chick starter until I got the quail. I have 6 lg trash cans of food. I didn't want to or have room for another. Now when they are ready to go out I keep a very close eye for cocci and have corridor ready in case I need it. I fed the adult flock 22% layer and then mixed in cracked born in the winter. This spring I tried to go back to just layer and they wouldn't eat it. I switched to the scratch. Most of my flock free range so its just a supplement. The birds in the breeder coops get the game bird starter and a little scratch. They pick all the corn out first. Now after reading about his bad the layer is for the roos I'm not going to use it again. I'm thinking this winter I will add game bird conditioner to the scratch. They still get to free range, but I feel they don't get as much in the winter.

Now I wonder if my girl with wry neck hasn't been picking the scratch out and not eating the game bird food. No more scratch in the coops. I took her to the vet this am and got pred pills to crush up and give her. I hope it works.

Honest Opinions Please...

I was using her as a breeder. Is it best to cull her? I've never done that before, but will if I need to. She keeps thrashing around even after I moved her to a small box so she has support. I've been giving the vitamins for 3 days. Starting the pred today. I still think and the vet agreed she had been pecked.

What should I do???

Congratulations. Its very exciting to get that first egg. Your girls are beautiful.

I would give her time with the pred. Give her a chance. What was the dosage? I am wondering is my baby's were in fact an injury rather then wry neck. And I have pred here that was for my cat.

1 5mg pill a day. I read later that she should be on it for 10 days so if it is working I will go back for more.

I just put a dozen silkie eggs in my incubator. I bought the fertile eggs on eBay, let them rest pointy side down for 24 hours and at noon yesterday placed them in the hova-bator. I will candle them in a few days. I'm so excited to see if and how they turn out, but I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch! Love the photo's of the silkies!

Good luck with your hatch. I also put 7 silky eggs in my bator over the weekend, but they were from my white silky pair. She had just come off being broody, so I guess I will have to wait and see in a few days if the eggs were fertile.
