Hi everyone. I'm very new to the chicken world. I have a frizzle silkie, a silkie, 2 sizzled silkies and a smooth sizzle rooster.

I need the rules on who to breed to what.
I know not to breed a sizzle to a sizzle or the feathers will be very brittle.

I think I understand that I can breed the smooth sizzle to the frizzle and I could get a mixture of all 4. Is there a thread that explains all this?

Thank you from Roseville California

Well all chicks hatched except 1. There are 3 total. And they are adorable.

The father has to be a partridge or calico rooster. Unless my senior splash rooster is throwing non blanks. I thought he was infertile.

How old until I can tell if the are sizzle or not?
What colors do you think they are?

Also I may take chicks away...Idk yet. She wants to go set on my other chickens eggs who started to lay eggs. I put them in a different corner of coop and she still goes to them.

At 3.5 - 4 months old, do you trim their crest and beards? Or do you tape them up? They are so fluffy and I can see that their beards are getting in their eyes. I feel like that's so painful, but I don't want to keep trimming them if what naturally happens is that the beards grow long enough to get past their eyes. In other words, if I keep trimming them short all the time, they will always grow to a length where they have no place else to go but their eyes until I trim again. But if I let them grow out, will the fluff get long enough to not touch their eyes?
I don't trim mine, but you can, if you aren't planning on showing. Feathers don't grow like hair does. Once you trim them, they don't grow back. They have to fall out to grow back. Like say during a molt. So if you decide to trim make sure you are committed, or you be plucking or waiting for a molt for them to regrow. As long as they can see to get around, and you aren't seeing irritation to the chicks eyes, I would just let them be for now. The feathers may not be fully emerged from their casings yet since they are so young. You could tape the crests, but I'm not sure what you could do to keep the beards out of the eyes other than trimming.
