Silkie thread!

I
How long do you all wait between hearing peeps to seeing external pips? I started hearing peeping around 10 pm last night. It's 9:30 am here now. I got concerned when I checked on my broody and heard lees peeps so I quickly lifted her a bit to see what the issue was. I did see two tiny external pips not sure if they have even broken the membrane yet. I just don't want them to shrink wrap or suffocate. These are not my own flocks eggs and it has been a new experience dealing with shipped eggs this time around. They are due to hatch thursday, tomorrow, day 21. This broody usually hatches early though. Her last hatch with my own flock eggs took very little time and was a day early. She is a bit thinner this time and I have been worried about humidity because the last candling the air cells were huge! Like a quarter inch larger than they were two days before( I had to candle one yesterday morning don't ask I did have a good reason lol). Anyway any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to intervene too soon, and I don't want to wait until it's too late either.
if you see a pip, they've broken te membrane. From peep to pip can be as long as 72 hours and pip to zip up to 48(from experience and following hatch-alongs). Be patient but cautious. In my experience, broodies tend to lose more fully formed chicks right before they hatch, but those that do tend to be substantially healthier than incubator chicks so you're better off. If you are committed to saving chicks, you'll practically want to set up camp next to your broody and you may not sleep much in the next two days. Number the pipped eggs so you know who pipped first. That way if one has been sitting too long, you know when to think about assisting.

I generally don't intervene, the broody knows best and it can take 24 -48 hours from pip to hatch. So long as they have externally pipped they don't risk drowning.
In saying that , I hatched one in my bras this week. Things have been very hectic here of late and momma was forced to leave the nest with one little egg left behind. It was stone cold when I picked it up , we had a mains pipe burst in the paddock just after I found the egg and there was nothing to do but stick it in my shirt. Bout an hour later it started peeping. Once it hatched I returned it to its momma.

Thank you.:) 4 of six are out. All still wet. Paint eggs. All black chicks lol! Doesn't that just figure. Maybe my last two will have spots. :)

Haha I think hatching in your bra automatically makes you its mother. Lol

I bet they're very cute! I want a black Silkie! I have buff, white and I think a silver partridge so far. Post photos if you can!

Did I hatch a flock of Roosters? These are about six weeks old. I'm also wondering if only the pullets have vaulted heads?
