Hi! Can you tell if these will be bearded or not? I'm just startin out with silkies. Some of the silkies in the pen had beards, but most didn't. Do U have to have bearded hen and roo to have bearded chicks? Or can a non bearded have a bearded chick?

No matter what pure breeds are mated not all chicks will meet SOP standards and breeders will cull chicks heavily to get one or two show quality out of a hundred hatches. Don't be discouraged. The chicks without beards are the Australian and U.K. standard and have both bantam and LF varieties. It 's all a matter of personal taste as far as looks go but the non-bearded are accepted in U.S. shows if I remember correctly. We actually like the bonnets, beards, and full crests so we waited to buy a 3 m/o pullet that was definitely sexable and with the look we liked. However she never had the really turquoise earlobes of our other pullet. There's always something that keeps us from finding the "perfect" show bird!
