Silkie thread!

I have a while male rooster silkie too and he's pretty mellow but can sometimes be aggressive. He will come charging at me but if I don't flinch or run away he doesn't do anything. He will also let me hold him and love him. He has bit my husband and friend though. He's so gorgeous Im kind of in the same boat too. Keep him or get rid of him? How do you keep them from biting? He doesn't peck...he literally bites and won't let go.

I'm going to look at some 2-3 day old silkie chicks this afternoon. They are, of course, straight run. I know that is impossible to tell what sex you are getting, but I as wondering if there were any clues I should look for. For some breeds it is sometimes best to pick the largest chicks or the ones most feathered out if you want hens. I haven't raised silkies in years, and I cant find any(even shady) information on what to look for. Any advise?

Well in General I look for the smallest chicks, the skiniest legs, the mostvwing feathering and a chick that stays low to the ground. I avoid chicks that stand up tall and walk around tall. I've had pretty good luck getting pullets by following those tips

That's what mine does. Bites until he grabs ahold of something and rips for all he's worth. I have a couple nasty bruises on my legs from it and that was through my jeans! No way I go in with him in shorts lol

My little roo got a little ' hoyty toyty ' once he started mating , but after some picking up and carrying around , now all I have to do is stomp my foot and he avoids me. I have several of his offspring and thankfully have not had a nasty one amongst them. He is now 5-6 old but there was a time that his future was looking bleak.
You guys might appreciate this little piece of Australia. :)

Hi Cinm. Yes my silkies are very skinny and small and don't eat much. When I feel my girl's chest and a bit lower down (like towards the legs) I can feel the middle bone sticking out. But as long as they have food all the time they should be fine. In fact if you just feed them at set times they might eat more? Mine are free ranging so I think they eat a lot of grass and bugs and stuff during the day.
Mine will have access
to free rang also as soon as all this snow is gone seems like forever ...Thanks makes me feel better
