Is your bird hobbling or showing signs of pain ? If not the infection may be an old one. I've seen birds that haven't needed surgery at all. Once you cut , if you cut, (I simply pulled the plug out with tweezers), you will need to spray the wound with an antibiotic spray like ' terramycin '. This is a staph infection so you would ideally keep the bird in a clean caged area and keep vet wrap on it.

Try soaking the feet in warm water with a 1/3 of a cup of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate ) to soften the ' plug ' .

All chickens are susceptible to Mereks. Vaccinate for it if it makes you feel better (and if Mereks is prevalent in your area, it is everywhere).

Good luck :)

Question for you all that have hatched silkies. Are they very susceptible to Marek's disease? Someone told me they are. Is vaccinating recommended?

Vaccinate your silkies! I started with 3 and one died from Marek's , they were not vaccinated. The other two, the hen died of some respiratory thing, and the other roo is with me and is 7 years old. They all lived with "Typhoid Mary". Out of 9 more hatchers, 2 died of Marek's , they were probably a year old and died after I lost 10 chicks to Marek's (raised with them but not silkies). So out of 12 unvaccinated who were there before Marek's came and in with the Marek's carrier at the time, 3 died of Marek's and they all had paralysis and lost their depth perception. Oh yea, one more, her mom died and she went totally catatonic. I don't know what to call that.

So I would say they are susceptible as the rest, no more no less.

How do you vaccinate for it? Meaning is it something I can find at my local feed store? I've given a lot of vaccinations in my life but never to a chicken. My starter flock came vaccinated already and when I started hatching my own additions I never thought about it. I admit I'm not overly excited about trying to stick a needle in my onery little roo lol

This may help.

An avian vet will know more but any vet is better than no vet. Hopefully they will do their research before you get there.
Chickens don't like being turned on their back and being held upside down for any length of time can be fatal.
If you must inspect the feet , sit yourself down and lay her on your knees, wrapped in a towel. Good luck at the vet.
