Silkie with a single comb? Will it change?



My Silkie, she too has the single, but she is about 1.5yrs old. She will probably end up looking like mine. But don't let that discourage you, because at least with the single she can see better. Sassy here is my first Silkie and I got her at a farmer's flea market.

The thing is, with all the standard silkie looks, she sports a green earlobe rather then the traditional blue. She has the silkie disposition though, and loves to be cuddled close to you. She even let the garbage man pet her (she don't like my husband though and I don't know why) He can not catch her unless he has a net, where I am able to just grab her. She has some feathers on her feet but not like my others. But I don't care she is a fine specimen of a Silkie and would not trade her for nothing. =o)

I really don't know, because I just purchased my Silkies, but was told when selecting them that the bigger the knot on the silkies head the better the comb will be. The two I picked with the bigger knots have fuller bigger combs. The one my daughter picked without a knot has a single comb. So that being said there just may be truth in that.

I am trying to find some Silkie Chicks for my sons. We want to get into 4H,and thought Silkies would be the way to go. Does anyone know where I can buy Silkies online,or does anyone have any for sale. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

Hi all, I'm a beginner "mama hen" and decided my first 2 hens HAD to be silkies. I have 2 white ones which I got at 14 months old. Having no experience at all I have a question: I was told when I got them a week ago that one was broody. One seemed so at first but now they are both out and about all day. Perhaps her broodiness stopped when she changed home. I only find 1 egg every 2 days between the 2 of them. I can't tell which one is laying as they look identical and tend to share a lay box at night. They were born together and I bought them both for that reason. I didn't get them for "high egg production" but is this normal or should I be doing something? Also I was told their wings aren't clipped - but I read silkies aren't great fliers anyway. Should I still be getting their wings clipped? Next door dog may not be so nice to them of thy escaped their run and flew over the low fence.

Silkies don't need wings clipped since they don't fly. They can hop, run, jump, and flap their wings, but not fly. Mine can jump straight up about 3-4 feet but usually only when startled. If you have a low fenced yard fortify it higher -- not to keep Silkies inside but to keep dogs/predators outside! Dogs can dig to get into your yard. We are replacing a chainlink fence with a block wall fence and adding privacy fencing along the top of the wall to deter feral/stray cats jumping over all the time.

Lost one of my 'red' Silkie chicks yesterday. :/ I kinda expected it though... the little thing wasn't really thriving like the other one. The remaining one does appear to be buff instead of red too, which kinda sucks, but it's ok. I only have one darker buff bird anyway and it's definitely darker than any of the buffs I've hatched out.

Silkies only on this site and they are available from all over the USA. There are a number of breeders in your state. Many ship adults, juvies, chicks, and eggs. Everything from pet quality to show ring winners. I've seen everything from free to very expensive.

Just wanted to post pics of my Silkie/Silkie cross chicks. The lady we bought them from also had Polish Crested bantams, and possibly another kind of chicken, but I'm not sure?
She said she was low on the purebred Silkies, so we said we were ok with crosses.
We have 8 in all (bought 6 and got 2 extra just in case - but they are all alive as of right now! Yay!)

So, here are my babies! Feel free to speculate about them, or just enjoy their cuteness, because they are definitely adorable! I am so excited for them to get bigger. They are so tiny right now.


Doodle
(5 toes and leg feathering, feathers appear normal rather than silkie)


Dumpling
(5 toes, leg feathering, very puffy crown/beard, feathers appear normal rather than silkie)


Olaf/Gloria - (depending on sex)
(This is one of the "spares", and the one we were told specifically is a Polish Crested, but has 5 toes)


Puff
(4 toes, no leg feathering, skin appears light, and feathers appear normal, but has a very puffy crown and beard)


Tux
(The other "spare," this is one of the largest chicks, feathers appear normal, but has 5 toes, and leg feathering)


Jubilee
(Our lightest chick with leg feathering, 5 toes, and silkie feathers)

(This chipmunk-striped cutie has 5 toes, leg feathering, and silkie feathers. I can't wait to see what she looks like when grown!)

Oh their little poofs are so cute. My friend specifically breeds silkie to polish and gets some lovely looking birds. Raven looks like a ' sizzle '.

I have my first ever silkie. Got my 6 hens from tsc and there were 2 lonely bantams left so naturally I took them home too! Haha! I know it's early yet to think of next winter since this one was so long, but my mother in law told me the silkie will need to live in my house come winter. Is this true? I live in Western Mass, temps cam go below zero and plenty of snow! Thank you all!
