Silkie thread!

Ok, fancychook. I'll check tonight. Your chicks are adorable!! All my silkie chicks heads look like te two non vaulted

Minnesota winters can be brutal. I have silkies in a 30x40 uninsulated barn. They do just fine without any heat. I have never lost a silkie in the winter. I actually worry more about the hot summers!

The heat can be far more brutal on rose and walnut combed birds for sure. I have lost Wyandotte due to extreme heat .
 
Yea, I worry more about heat down here. I try to give them all fresh cool water in the afternoon, or ice bottles.
 
Straw and hay are ok so long as they don't get wet. Apart from the ' spontaneous combustion ' danger , once wet they harbour mould that in turn can trigger upper respiratory symptoms. They also make for a perfect environment or breeding ground for mites, especially straw , with its hollow crevices.
