I am a new silkie owner. my chicks around 3 months old now. I have a question,,,on picture #5 the white silkie with the red on the head, does that mean it is a boy or just another kind of silkie? I have 6 silkies, one is a partridge, the others are white and one has the red mark. thank you. your babies are beautiful.

It's just the color pattern, @getreal. It doesn't have anything to do with gender.

coffee coloured hen = Latte

I'm not sure what color your cock bird is (pretty color minus the red wings), but I would probably try and find a cock to match the colors of my girls and separate them by color unless you were just wanting "fun" colored silkies for pets then he would be just fine. I have a few girls from a "fun colored pen" ... I'm sure him and your girls will make beautiful silkies together

It's usually much easier to find nice quality cock birds than it is to find nice quality hens. Your hens seem pretty nice from the photos. I love the last girl in the first set of photos. She looks mottled... really pretty girl

Hey there everyone! popping in for some help/advice....

so im hatching with one of my broody silkie for a third time now. just on day 3 she took 2 eggs from her nest and rolled them all the way across the coop to another corner so she wouldnt sit on them. one was a clear, the other im not sure...i saw veining the other day but now i see its not as good of veining as the other eggs that are moving..its also a tad watery looking and i havent looked long enough for movement.
isnt it crazy when they know there are duds?

now, on day 7, my other two silkies have decided to join all the fun. they are piled upon each other splitting the 6 eggs. im hoping they dont break them, but honestly i have no idea what to do when i separate for hatching. i normally move my broody thats hatching but everyone is sitting...LOL



have anyone had any luck hatching and leaving the chicks and hen in the coop? there are 3 broodies, one off and on broody and a rooster. thought?

He looks to be porcelain and you will get some nice combinations with your hens, but as adorkable said, to get pure white , black or blue you need a rooster of each colour with the appropriate coloured hens. White mixed with any other colour is ' unpredictable ' . I keep my whites sedated from my partridge and splash/blues. Still he looks ok, do you have any other pics of him ?

I separate the broodies , but only to protect the eggs from ' scuffles ' . I have hatched them in the coop , without any dramas. Problem usually isn't with the Roos, but regulating different feed requirements and limiting access to water troughs. Rats are also very opportunistic when there are very young chicks around.
If you feel you can cover these issues and don't have the set up for segregation, you won't know unless you give it a go.

Here is a picture of him running. Only other I got but I can post more in the morning. So would be be possible though so solid chicks are it's most likely not gonna happen? Just curious. Thanks!
