Silkie thread!

I plan to show in April as well, my chickens are friendly, and love to follow me around. Just gotta work more on handling.

You need to start picking them up by placing your hand , Palm up and sliding it in between the legs. Lift gently and then place your other hand lightly on the saddle area. It is best to practice this technique from a young age. If your birds are flighty the judge will disqualify them. Keeping your show birds in a confined area in the week leading up to the show also helps with handling .

Awe! He IS adorable! Great pictures too! My fav is a roo too.

Not looking forward to the day he starts crowing. Have you ever heard of the 'No Crow' collar? It's a little controversial, though. Some people are totally against it, others think it's great. I've never used one, but I'm tempted to give it a try and see for myself what I think of it.
As far as i know, my dad isn't bothered by the crowing as much as he is by the prospect of fertilized eggs, which are edible, but he doesn't feel comfortable eating them, and doesn't want to have baby chickens running around. too much to handle. ( even though i am the one taking care of them) My mom doesn't want to buy a no crow collar, but she hates the crowing. cant win for loosing. my techer offered me a place to keep him at school, which I can talk to my parents about, AND have a new chicken ( Silkie) at home

Oh! Well, that sounds like a great deal!

I've been handling them from under, it really helps ^-^ I didnt know that them freaking out makes the judges doc points, but thanks for the info! Ill make sure to check that they are comfortable with being held ^-^

I'm probably getting some silkie chicks soon, new to silkies, any pointers? I actually plan to let them brood my coturnix quail eggs.
If you are dong Quail Eggs, I recomend Bantams ( size comparison, less chances of smooshing) , they are extremley friendly, white gets dirty really fast, Buff are adoreable, Black can get over heated, Buff is adoreable. I reccomend Buff XD

Hey guys- where did you get your silkies from and how are their temperament/quality? I really like silkies, but I want to try other hatcheries, as different lines have different qualities. These are mainly pets, so they don't have to be show quality. Thanks!
