Silkie thread!

I would like to share that my beloved paint silkie's eggs consistently weighed in at 1/2 the weight of a large egg from Meijer grocery store so I used two of her eggs for every one called for in a recipe. Her eggs were beautiful and every time she laid one I hugged her and thanked her for nourishing me. Sadly she was attacked by probably a hawk two weeks ago and I miss her terribly. I loved her so dearly. She was kept indoors but that morning she wanted to go out and I let her I wish I could roll back time and not have let her out.

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

Thank you Sylvester017 for the pictures, I love the set up there. My egg is tiny, hopefully it does get bigger because it was her first egg. But comparing it to my polish tophats who do not lay large eggs, it is very small  (she is a very petite hen).  I do not have the best laying group, I was foolish and picked my birds for beauty instead of productivity :D  i'm sure paying for it lol. Next I would like a maran, I love those dark eggs.

mammabird724, I am so sorry to hear the lost of your beloved silkie. I know how sad it is to lose our birds, we grow very attach to them. Do not regret letting her go outside, at least she had the chance to enjoy the outdoors and even if a hen has a short life its good that she had the best of a life and love a silkie can have :)

Rest assured, her eggs will get bigger. Pullet eggs are always smaller, no matter the breed.
In this pic , from smallest to largest, fart egg, Silkie ( second year layer ) , Wyandotte and Sussex.

Thank you for sharing, yes mine looks like that fart egg. Her second egg came today and it was a pretty color. My sussex just started laying on the same week as the silkie. Biggest egg in my coop, yay!! lol

Oh, I want to sob! How very sad!

I have a very little Black Silkie at 2.2-lb but she lays eggs too large for her IMO - I would feel better if her eggs weighed in at 1-oz rather than 1.25-oz.

We had to re-home our 7-lb Cuckoo Marans - she was sneaky and vicious toward our 2-lb Silkies and kept challenging the 4.5-lb alpha White Leghorn who managed to keep her in her place! Before the Marans' meanness got contagious to make the rest of our little flock contentious we immediately re-homed her when we saw her attack our newest little Black Silkie. My friends re-homed their BCMs for the same aggressive reason - just too mean in a flock of 15 other layer breeds. The Marans are evenly matched in their own breed flock but it's tricky to meld them with other breeds - they tend to bully gentler or smaller birds. Some Marans CAN lay pretty eggs but ours gave only 2 to 3 eggs/week of #4 color on the egg chart - she had a huge feed appetite, was sneaky to steal other hens' forage, and was too lazy to forage for herself. I will not have a Marans again - especially after she yanked out the crest, beard, tail, and body feathers of our Silkie who we thought was molting. Here's the poor Silkie after the Marans did her damage! The feathers all eventually grew back thick and fluffy (thank goodness!) but her comb was chewed off and of course did not grow back.

www I love the lil tinies. When I've cracked them there are little pea sized yolks

I took the little Silkie "fart" egg (shown next to an XL Vital Farms egg) and tried to crack open the little egg. The little egg was impossible to crack and had to use a knife to cut it in half - a very tiny little yolk was in the center of the white (dish). I used it in a breakfast omelet with the big brown egg

Do Silkie broodies have the good sense to push a fart egg out of a clutch or would the little egg hatch with the rest? I never thought about it before because I never had a fart egg before!
