Lol that's cute! Do the other chickens act like the colorful silkies are new chickens now or no change in status?

that greasiness is the natural oil that makes them water resistant. and it will wash off and make them less resistant to ain which can kill chickens because the aren't meant to get wet to the skin.

Diatomaceous earth is best for getting rid of mites. that's what i put on my chickens. it does become ineffective if it gets wet so your chickens have to be dry. you can also treat there run area as long as it hasn't rained. it will kill any crawling insects. it will do nothing for flying insects.

No change. Even my Shamo Misha, who will go after somebody for looking at her the wrong way, seemed not to notice. She still shoved them out of the way to get to the feeder, but she does that to anybody no matter how big or small they are.

Eh, I'm not too worried. I've had plenty of chickens get wet after a good wash with no issue. The oils ain't too effective at their job regardless because my dumb birds will sit in the rain all day and get soaked to the bone in an hour.

I'd love to know what kind of DE you're buying. I've never had it effective as anything more than a preventative. I plan on nuking my birds with Permethrin dust and will be applying a few drops of WD-40 on the advice of my avian vet, who says it works miracles for bugs. She's a miracle worker herself so I trust her word on it!

What is he mixed with? or is Smooth Silkie a thing?

Maybe he's a smooth sizzle? I know they make those since you can't breed frizzle x frizzle. And Sizzles are basically frizzled Silkies so I guess smooth sizzle = smooth Silkie?

Silkies don't tolerate getting wet to the bone, and the greasiness applies to all animals. It is the natural protectiveness against the elements , however if you wish to colour your silkies you will need to get under it. In my 14 years of owning silkies I've only lost one to the elements. DE is not the cure all that is touted.

New grow out pic's of a few of my current favorite kids.

I love the new white grow outs.

Buff is new in my pens. Loving these two little ones. Even with squash face.

This Cuckoo chick is the rarest color in my flock. So pretty. Whether it is female or male, it will go into an all black pen.
