Silkie thread!

That's a brooder to me. Mine was an old guinea pig cage. I just didn't know if they were outside with a broody hen or inside. I have 2 broody hens now and I keep trying to convince them that it's too cold for that nonsense and we don't have enough room.

if you call a Tupper with a heat lamp a brooder they are there in my half bath off the muck room. I have about 25 new chicks.

Today im going to look for some silkie eggs to incubate .About time of year for it .Im goingvto try for crele look .My one hen is cuckoo x roo partridge

My Christmas chicks move upstairs today to a dog play pen with netting over plastic and a tarp. I will leave then a small heat bulb for another week or two as it is 48-50 up there. I think it will help transition them to going outside and give them more room.

I have these three silkies that my frequently broody wyandotte hatched. I wanted them for my daughter to have as pets. I believe she hatched them mid June. I know the last pic is not too good, but would you say that the first pic is a male and the the last two are female. I don't believe any have laid eggs as yet.

I think your right. Couldn't see the last one's head good, though.

I'm thinking about getting silkies from mcmurray hatchery I know they are straight run but I wanted to see what the quality of them are like
1 do they still go broody
2 how often do they lay
3 are they good moms
4 are the roosters calm
5 how many weeks to maturity
Thx in advance

I got some from Meyer hatchery.
One of the 3 hens I had went broody in the year I had them.
They laid around four a week.
The one that hatched chicks was a very good (and protective) mother.
The roosters were shy. I ordered six, they came straight run, 3 hens and 3 roosters. They were all calm, but not particularly friendly, but that's my fault.
They matured in about 5 months.
Just know that because the big hatcheries are going for quantity not quality, they won't be all big and poofy like @fancychooklady's for example.
My six were lovely, but their crests were quite small

1. Yup, they're very broody. Mine go broody a couple times a year.
2. They might lay a few times a week. The eggs aren't huge but they're decent sized for a bantam.
3. They make great moms! A lot of people use them as natural incubators because they're such good parents.
4. The majority of cockerels and cocks I've met have been quite nice.
5. They'll be fully grown by 20 weeks or so and probably begin laying 22-30 weeks.

If you want REAL Silkies, go to a breeder. Hatcheries churn out birds that somewhat resemble Silkies, but they do not have nearly the type you would expect from a proper Silkie. (Which basically means significantly less fluff and probably a very small crest, potentially no beard).

any silkies that come from a hatchery are going to be pet quality (I would personally get them from a small backyard breeder that has better quality and knows what they are doing but doesn't think their stuff don't stink-ya know what I mean)
most all silkies love goingbroody no matter the quality
the better quality the silkies the longer it takes for them to mature (when you get to show quality they take closer to a year) but once they start laying they lay great and cute little cream colored eggs (takes 3 eggs to =2 regualr sized), but then once again when they decide to molt or go broody or the weather doesn't suit them right they will stop laying and take forever to get back
they are excellent mothers, but when you have the better quality silkies the chick can easily get stuck in the hens fluff and die
most of the roosters ive had seem to have little dog syndrome
just remember that just ALL ANIMALS ARE DIFFERENT, just because they are called a certain type does not mean that they will act to a standard
