I've got two silkies wanting to go broody and its supposed to be 16 degrees tonight. Way too early I would think. I keep kicking them off the nest and taking the eggs and they run around in the yard and eat and drink and act normal for a couple of hours but the next time someone lays an egg they are back on the nest. Yesterday two of them were sharing one egg and seemed pretty chill about it. I don't have a rooster so no fertile eggs right now. When it gets a little warmer I had thought about leaving them sitting on eggs for a few days then buying a couple of chicks at the farms store and slipping them under the hens at night. Will that work? Either that or maybe I'll buy a few fertile eggs. Anyway, way too early right?.

i always move the broody to the baby pen and put two fake eggs under for about a week to be sure she will sit. THEN i give fertile eggs or wait even another week and put some feed store chicks under. they take them fine if you put under after dark. i did give my cochin some mid day and she was fine with it tho. they are all different. as for the temps? she will keep the chicks warm..if it is low 30 etc in the day time i don't know if that would be problematic or not while she gets off to poop and eat etc...

Oh my goodness!! I love them!! They're so cute and fluffy and I see a sizzle!!! do you happen to sell any or where did you get them from!

So long as you provide the basics, even in the colder months momma will look after them.
I set eggs in winter so that the pullets will be coming into lay for spring /summer.

cream i think....unless the different colors lay different color eggs...my self blue laysDARK cream....and my last silkie egg zipping right now!!! woo hoodoo

Ivory maybe, not bright white.
