Silkie thread!

Happy for you that you found her . The TSC companies around my area all get their chicks from the same hatchery which is Meyers Hatchery. I bought my birds from this hatchery and have had no problems in any way shape or form. My grandson Drew bought his golden buff from TSC last spring before mine arrived at .75 ea because they were already getting their feathers, at 2/3 weeks old. I don't plan on showing silkis but do want silkis that meet the standard of perfection so I might have to buy some from a breeder. Just need to find someone close to Ohio that will ship over night.

Hello all!!! Silkie newbie owner here. I recently purchased 6 silkies at my local TSC this past Tuesday Here is a grainy pic of them today. I don't have the best phone camera, sorry:( . I noticed today some of these chicks are starting to get wispy feathers on their wings. Is this indicative of gender?....Crossing my fingers and hoping for more hens then roos:fl Also noted one of them is quite aggressive, keeps pecking at the others. I'm new to chickens, but does the pecking order start so soon? Ps can anyone tell me what colors these chicks will be when the grow up? I assumed the 2 lightest are white. Two appear buff in color. the other two have a faint stripe down the back...Not sure what color those are going to be. Thanks in advance for all your help.. I'm curious to see if my BO will get along well with the guys!
The wispy wing feathers will happen with all Silkie babies but doesn't indicate gender. They'll go thru a really funky feathering stage since they don't have regular feathers. My chicks that were platinum blonde turned out white and my 3 yellowish chicks: one turned out white, one blondish buff, and one whitish buff.

Thank you! I hope you find some close by. I worry too much about having them shipped.

does anybody know if chicks sold in tsc have been vaccinated?

I asked my feed store guy about the chicks he orders from Privett. He has the option to have his orders vaccinated but he chooses not to order vaccinated chicks. His excuse is that the other chicks will pick at other chicks' vaccinations and he loses too many chicks that way. I wondered if he just wants to make more profit without having to eat the chick vaccination costs but then his reason could be valid. In any event outright ask your feed store ordering dept whether they order vaccinated or non-vaccinated chicks. Some hatcheries vaccinate their chicks no matter what, others offer you the option. My preference today is to get my birds as juveniles from private breeders who are NPIP certified and vaccinate their birds. Everyone has difference preferences.

Surely the workers could find out. Meyers charged me .25 per chick but would not do the silkis. They will be a year old around June 8. Still waiting on the hens to lay theri first eggs. The Sultuns started laying a month ago. Ordered the brown egg layer assortment a year ago and golden buffs have beengreat layers. Also got 6 white lehhorn and lost 2 to a hawk and our beagle. Have 40 chickens 9 are roosters that we will have to separate some.
