Silkie thread!

Just brought home our new chicks yesterday. White silkie, cochin/frizzled sizzle (I believe), red silkie, and black smooth. Hoping they're all girls!

Oh they are adorable!!! Makes me want to get some more silkies. I have had chickens for the last 4 years and have my first silkie, now 22 weeks old, that I just adore. Silkies have different personalities I have found than other types of chickens! I will keep my fingers crossed that all of yours are girls!

Thanks! They're so much fun.

Too cute to boot, whether roo's or not, whether pure blood or not! Great pets either way! Congrats on your new babies! Can't wait till ours come in June!!

If they are roos we will do anything we can to keep them, we are in the city though. So attached already.

Is it normal for Silkies to avoid using a ramp? My Silkies' coop has a ramp up into the nesting area and my Silkies won't use it. They will stay all night in the run area, huddled up rather than climb the ramp to roost for the night. Does pushing them up the ramp help?

We designed a ramp for our Silkie coop but we had the same problem with them avoiding the ramp. I think they don't like how slippery it feels, even though we had slats for traction. We are using cinder blocks as steps now and they seem to prefer them. I want to design something for chicks to get up and down without wing feathers to assist but I may just have to make nursery brooders for hens and chicks together until the chicks can manuever the steps. I like raised coops but the Silkies do not handle the ramp concept as well as other breeds. We actually have a deck with steps on our Orpington coop and they seem to prefer the steps more too. They all congregate on the deck at bedtime as they line up to go in the coop.

Can anyone help me determine what colors my new silkie/sizzle babies are? I'm new to silkies and I purchased these from a breeder who got the eggs from Kathy Leininger. She said they were Glenn Sees Lines? No idea what that means but she she told me they were lavender, porcelain, black, splash, blue cream, and denim. Problem is I don't know which ones are which ! LOL. Somebody please help this newbie !

Also, there are seven chicks total but I can't seem to find the pic of the seventh chick and they are all asleep now. OOps! Haha

From what I understand, Silkies are leary of elevated places due to their lack of flying ability. They also do not roost as most chickens do, and so far, the breeders I have spoken to, and viewed their coops online do not place roosts in their coops or runs for that reason. Ground nesters. Actually think that's pretty darn smart of them!

Five is black, three and six porcelain maybe? One lavendar, two blue cream, four splash maybe? Hard to tell and I am not a expert on any colors, never mind the fancier ones! Lol! But this is my guess! Sorry. Maybe look at Glenn Sees website?
