Silkie thread!

Hello all! Can anyone tell me some fun things about silkies or why you love them. I'm trying out some new breeds and ordered 5 blue silkies along with several other breeds. They may be blue, splash, black or I think even white. I'm secretly hoping for splash! Anyways, they should be here soon and I am SO excited!

That must be worrysome, I'm sure you are excited to get a lavender showgirl! Did you put her by herself or back with the mom or what? I remember we had a turken when I was a kid and the other chicks picked at the red neck skin and killed it.But sometimes they just pick on anything different.

I've never had a problem like that so no personal experience or good suggestions. All my broody silkie girls are good moms and are very protective of the chicks whether they look like them or not. But since I've got naked neck adults, maybe they don't see that as strange anymore. But I don't know how much that matters though. As you can see a few pictures back in this thread, I've got a silkie to whom I gave some nonsilkie baby pullets I picked up at Rural King; a specked sussex, a welsummer, a couple of easter eggers and a sicilian buttercup. . They don't look much like silkies but mama loves them all the same. Good luck with your poor baby.

I love my silkies because they are the sweetest chickens. They are really fun to breed and show. Depending on where you get them, you can exhibit them at different shows and win awards. They are also wonderful broody hens and great mothers. You'll never need to use your incubator again!
Please post pictures when you finally get them. We all love to see little chicks!

My silkies. About 13-14 weeks. Still unsure of sex. No eggs yet. But no crowing that I've noticed either. Any guesses?

Thanks! I put it back in the incubator after I found it like that. I think it had gotten pretty cold, maybe trying to get away from bad broody. Broody is a salmon Faverolle and this is only her second time broody and she is five years old. She hatched my Seramas last time and loved them madly. That is why I was so shocked and confused.
I took all her eggs from her to finish in the incubator while I figure out what to do! The five that made it are doing really well and all eating and drinking so I am happy!

I love love love my silkies! They are beautiful, calm, and enjoy my company. I don't show them. I just enjoy watching their antics.

Hello ! I had a question in regards to the 4 silkie babies I just bought 2 days ago. I noticed they arent drinking or eating alot, they are walking around peeping, no bloody poops or acting funny. Just wanted to know if this is normal?

They are fun watching when they come running too - cute little waddle-walk and hopping and jumping while running to you! I've had 14 chickens come and go in 5 years and my 2 oldest birds are my original Silkies - they've out-endured and out-survived the other breeds that came and went in our yard.

5-yr old Partridge

41/2 yr old Black Silkie - feathers have sun-bleached to rust

The only LF remaining in the yard with the Silkies - a 11/2 yr old Blue Breda
