Silkie thread!

Question about Roo behavior. My silkie chick that doesn’t like to be held is crowing at 6 weeks and has a comb. So I’m pretty sure that it’s a he. Being that it’s so unfriendly already will it be a nasty Roo when it’s older?

He has been handled and picked up but not as much as my other Chicks because he run and hides and won’t take treats.

All you can do is play with him, love him, “force” him to love you. Otherwise, yes, he probably will be a meanie...

Guys do y’all have any good information for how to assist a hatch, and if I should or not? It’s day 28, and my eggs are rocking aggressively, but I don’t know what to do? Maybe they got shrink wrapped, I don’t know but 3/4 eggs were rocking and rolling.... What do I do??! Read the post above for more information...

I never help a chick unless it's been sitting in the zipped position not moving for way too long. You will kill them if you help too soon. The veins wont have receeded and the yolk may not be absorbed. Chicks that don't make it to that stage have something wrong most of the time.

I've had chicks take well over 24 hours from external pip to zip.

With how late your chicks are, you need to calibrate for incubator temp. It's way too low.

You can cross your fingers and hope one survives. Most of the ones Ive had hatch later than day 23 have died even if they made it out of the shell. I did have one hatch on day 25 and survive.

I had issues this last hatch. Had someone convince me I was running too low on humidity by having it at 45% for my hatches. So I upped it to 50%. Bad bad idea. Had sticky chicks for the first time this hatch. A third of them had to be peeled carefully with use of warm water.

Do you know how hard it is to soak off stuck membrane while making sure the chick doesn't inhale any water?

Back down to 45% and ignoring anyone who tries to tell me I'm doing it wrong now. I don't up humidity for hatch either. Normally I don't have any issues with this bator.

Okay so I counted again and the 18th was the day they were supposed to hatch. I mean, I put them in the incubator on February 26th, and today is March 26th.... All I know is that they were wiggling, but I couldn’t hear any chirping, although it may be because of the type of I bator... Janoel12. I know they are silkies... just look at the size of the egg and you will know they are silkies. I’m not at home right now, won’t be until 10 o’clock tonight (It’s currently 2:33 where I am). I may be able to get home at 6.... but that’s not a given. Should I try to help it hatch? I know my humidity is like... 40 or less in there, so maybe they need help? Plus I also opened the incubator yesterday, maybe they are strink wrapped?
I kept the temperature at 35.5 C, and the humidity has varied. During lockdown, the humidity shot up to 90...
I also started my lockdown on day 18 if this helps at all... Pray for me, and thanks in advance!! :fl:hugs:he
No don’t help especially if it’s not even piped. Have you candled? Did you have a separate thermometer and humidity monitor that was calibrated. Maybe something is off on your incubator and the chicks didn’t hatch due to deformity. If you are sure you placed on February 26, they are a week over due that means that something is off. I’m not sure what this rocking is but if the chick hasn’t piped or the egg chirping I don’t think it is a viable chick.

The temp is 35.5 C... I thought that was at the high end... Also, It’s day 28, I don’t think assisting will do anything worse... but again this is my first hatch so....

Oh okay... I candled on the 25th day and the egg was like it was supposed to be... I’m sad to know the truth... :hit
Is there any chance that maybe, just maybe, they will hatch? :fl

Here is a great thread for incubating. I would start collecting eggs to start over, read this thread and get separate temperature/humidity monitor that you have calibrated with ice water / salt test. https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...-sunshine-hosts-bantychooks-and-more.1137467/

Yes. Sounds like you were quite off on the temp.

37.3° C is where my bator alarm goes off as too low. I also have it set for 37.7°C as too high.

Always have a second calibrated thermometer inside the bator at egg level. Best to have a second hydrometer as well. Most bators are off some.
