We have 2 buff chicks and 1 black.

Okay, silkie people! Random silkie question for you.

Either something is wrong with my hatchery silkies or they are in an eternal molt. All of them have lost most of their topknot and all three are looking really not-fluffy. They aren't skinny so much as just not fluffy. They don't seem to be losing body mass. They are all acting just fine. It's just that for MONTHS their feathers have looked horrible! No sign of mites. No rooster in that pen with them for about a month now. One has gone broody. One is still laying. I'm not sure about the third. The two non-broodies have not gone broody since last summer. For a silkie that is unheard of. They were broody three times in the first year. This last year nothing.

Could this just be a molt that is taking forever? It is the strangest thing. What is going on with them?

Hmmm, some mites and lice are microscopic--do you use any sort of pest control? Feathermites live inside the feather follicle, so chances of seeing them are slight; they eat feathers, not blood, so ivermectin is less likely to work unless it is given in a dip that saturates the feathers.

Some birds take forever to molt.

Some birds groom each other to the point of no feathers.

And that doesn't leave the birds feeling all oily and keep their feathers matted down? I use it as a premise spray but couldn't convince myself to use it on the Silkies because of the oily base.
