Remember it takes silkies about 8 to 9 months to really finish up. They develope slowly. Example I have hens that are about 15 months old, they had really nice size crests. Have been in the breeding pens for a year, well they have just finished thier molt this fall/winter, and the crests on these girls have doubled in size. I actually had to stop and check band numbers, wondering who this bird was, I had looked at her the week before, pin feathered up, not paid much attention to her in the breeding group. Then was like how did that bird get in here? Who is that? Read the band number & was like OH, this is different. So you really need to grow out the birds, and will over time develope an eye for the traits you like, and will be able to know how that bird will finish up, by the way it developes as a youngster. As far as places for show info you can log onto the American Bantam Association, American Poultry Association, American Silkie Bantam Association, or The Poultry Press. All are great sources for show info.

What kind of tags/bands do you use on your silkies? I tried the little round ankle rings and you couldn't see them at all. They also seemed to smush the leg feathers in an unfortunate way. What do you all use and where did you get them?

Hello all,

I have a newbie (i.e. dumb) question.

I have 10 silkies that I got from Welp. I *thought* they were all beardless. But I've noticed this little guy developing "fluff" on the sides of his face. (I think he's a cockeral.....acts like one!)

Anyway, does he look like he's bearded to you? Or is this something completely different? None of the others have developed anything like this yet. He's 7 weeks and 4 days in this pic.

Thanks for the help!!

I get the numbered/year bands from the ABA. They are put on when the birds are chicks and stay on. I also ziptie the birds, with different colors for breeding group id etc.

Congratulations!
I just love my Mutt Silkies... sometimes I feel a little intimidated in here because there are some really gorgeous birds on this thread ... but you just can't judge a book by the cover -- my babies might not have the right toes but they are absolutely gorgeous on the inside. I will take anyone's culls! LOL

I was so excited when my little girl laid her first egg... I kept it and am just trying to think of the perfect thing to do with it... I want to make something special... If anyone has any ideas of things to make with a first egg, let me know!!
