Congratulations!
I just love my Mutt Silkies... sometimes I feel a little intimidated in here because there are some really gorgeous birds on this thread ... but you just can't judge a book by the cover -- my babies might not have the right toes but they are absolutely gorgeous on the inside. I will take anyone's culls! LOL

I was so excited when my little girl laid her first egg... I kept it and am just trying to think of the perfect thing to do with it... I want to make something special... If anyone has any ideas of things to make with a first egg, let me know!!

Well where have you been?? No one in my area wants any.. They wouldn't want one if it laid a gold egg! I have to take my culls to shows and pawn them off on kids that are tickled to spend their allowance on fuzzy chickens.. LOL

Though I have a couple of beautiful silkies, and I'm still so proud of my white bearded roo who won his first blue ribbon this year... I still have my less then stellar black silkie sisters. They don't have much going on in the sets of standards... but they always come running to mama when I'm out and they love to be held. I couldn't dream of letting them go either.

I have a black roo that like that. He has gold in his hackles.. But he is the sweetest bird on the property.. He came out of the egg sweet as honey! He isn't going anywhere!!!

Haha! You are so right! Too bad he already already has a name! Grandpa Munster would be PERFECT! I doubt I can convince my daughter to change it, she has claimed him as hers. All my kids have one and I own the rest!

And thanks for the guess Ms. Fluffy Puffy! As I said before I have no clue. But I've learned that since they came from a hatchery, nothing should really surprise me! For all I know, he could be crossed with an EE and those are muffs!

That's what I thought when I looked at him...

I get the numbered/year bands from the ABA. They are put on when the birds are chicks and stay on. I also ziptie the birds, with different colors for breeding group id etc.

Do you by chance have a picture of them on your birds? The pictures on the ABA website are impossibly tiny for my old eyes!

How do they expand to keep from cutting off circulation in the bird's leg? How do you see them through all the feathers?

Clear nail polish will keep it. Or you could tap the ends and blow out the contents to make a decoration out of it.

Please just don't do what my son did, draw a face on it, name it JJ and put it in bed with you.........it wasn't pretty.....he had kept JJ for two weeks before that night.....something was really rotten in Denmark!
