Silkie thread!

I use ivermectin in rotation with permethrin based sprays and dusting the area they sleep in. I have used the frontline spray in the past, but am out right now. It's so expensive.

When I completely strip pens I spray with either a permethrin based spray or another which I cannot remember the name of right now. Both work great when used in rotation.

Hi I was hoping some Silkie experts could help me as I am fairly new to Silkies (and chickens in general). I have a female white Silkie. This winter though, she has started getting pretty dirty. My run isn't dirt so she can't really take a dust bath. I think my mom would kill me if I brought her in the house to bathe her and it's too cold to do it outside. How can I clean her up? And keep her clean? Should I provide dirt for them to dust bathe in?

Thank you!

I won't be gettin my silkies till spring, but I do think they need some kind of dirt or dirt/sand to dust bathe in. I have seen pics where they will put a kittie litter pan in the run and fill it for them.. and alot of people do bathe their silkies or any chicken in their house. They do love a bath, just don't bath her and put her back outside wet you'll need to blow dry and accilmate her back out doors.

Look her over to figure out is she has a mite/lice problem, or if she is simply dirty. If it is her bottom that is all messy, then she probably does. Talk to your mom about bringing her in for a bath, promising to clean the tub and any other area that gets messy afterwards. You will need to thoroughly shampoo her with dog flea/tick shampoo according to the directions. The wrap her in an old towel to absorb the water, and after 15-30 minutes dry her with a hair dryer. You will need to keep her inside for about 24 hours, and when you do put her back outside, it should be during the warmest part of the day (since it is currently cold--in summer you would want to acclimate a bird during the cooler portion of the day). Make sure your mom knows that mites & lice can kill birds, but that the ones that infest birds do NOT infest mammals, so they are not a concern for people, dogs or cats that may be inside.

Thank you. Her bottem is dirty but her feathers also have a yellowish tint to them. Is that normal? I am still new to chickens so what should I look for when looking for lice or mites? Just little bugs? I will ask again about bathing her inside. I have parakeets inside, if I brought my Silkiein and she did have mites/lice, could it effect my parakeets? What is a recommended brand of shampoo? If she doesn't have mits/lice what kind of shampoo should I use? I should probably look over my other chickens too right? Should I only bathe the ones that are sick or all of them? Thanks again

Pull out one of the discolored feathers close to her vent and hold it in your hand, if they are feather mites you will see them crawl off in your hand, they are tiny!
Yes your Parakeets can get them!!!!
