Silkie thread!

Keep your parakeets in a separate room with the door closed till your sure all the mites or lice have been killed by the bath. more than likely if one has external parasites they all do, you'll need to clean out all the old bedding in youre coop and either dust with sevin or spray it out making sure to get into all the cracks and the roost real good, then just put in enough bedding for about a week because you'll need to repeat this process again, and also treat your chickens again to make sure you have killed all the bugs that hatched out after the first bathing.. There is various things you can use, but one of my favorites is Epernix pour-on because your getting external and internal parasites with one thing. and since this is a cold time of year it is also nice that you don't have to get any birds wet. Lice are pretty easy to see, they are tanish and the eggs will be in clusters at the end of the feather shaft close to the body, mites on the other hand can be harder but with white silkies not so much because they are blk and would probably stand out pretty good on white feathers.. mites look like very tiny pepper specks.

Correct.

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know where I can get Epernix online? Tractor Supply in Jacksonville doesn't have it.

Layla, after you bathe your silkie, change your clothes and thoroughly clean your hands and arms before you handle your parakeet. Besides my silkie flock, I have indoor cockatoos and finches and I'm extremely careful about cross contamination. I've had No problems after almost 2 years so I must be doing something right.

By the way, I spray the bottoms of my shoes with alcohol at the front door and change clothes/bathe after I come back from a chicken or bird show. You would be surprised how many bacteria/virus/nasty germs come in on your shoes....onto your carpet...and then to your birds. At the risk of sounding like a germophobe, I also clean the bottom of my purse with same spray bottle of alcohol at front door. I try not to sit it on the floor anywhere, but it still sits in grocery baskets and other public places. This is a quick and easy first line of defense and my birds are worth protecting.

Look her over to figure out is she has a mite/lice problem, or if she is simply dirty. If it is her bottom that is all messy, then she probably does. Talk to your mom about bringing her in for a bath, promising to clean the tub and any other area that gets messy afterwards. You will need to thoroughly shampoo her with dog flea/tick shampoo according to the directions. The wrap her in an old towel to absorb the water, and after 15-30 minutes dry her with a hair dryer. You will need to keep her inside for about 24 hours, and when you do put her back outside, it should be during the warmest part of the day (since it is currently cold--in summer you would want to acclimate a bird during the cooler portion of the day). Make sure your mom knows that mites & lice can kill birds, but that the ones that infest birds do NOT infest mammals, so they are not a concern for people, dogs or cats that may be inside.

Thank you. Her bottem is dirty but her feathers also have a yellowish tint to them. Is that normal? I am still new to chickens so what should I look for when looking for lice or mites? Just little bugs? I will ask again about bathing her inside. I have parakeets inside, if I brought my Silkiein and she did have mites/lice, could it effect my parakeets? What is a recommended brand of shampoo? If she doesn't have mits/lice what kind of shampoo should I use? I should probably look over my other chickens too right? Should I only bathe the ones that are sick or all of them? Thanks again

Yellowish tinge is probably unburned feathers, and is pretty normal. Mites and lice will only affect your parakeets if they have access--generally not very likely for birds that are not allowed to range in the same areas.

I use Sergeant's Golf, and if htey are cohabitating, yes, bathe them all.

Well, just to let y'all know we added Silkie #8 today by winning a Silkie Roo @ the Morganton Show. He is settling in, but will be a little lonely until our others are old enough to go out with him. Any suggestions? A stuffed toy maybe?
