I agree about the hatchery bird.. I think he is .. or was supposed to be a Partridge. When you breed you don't want those red combs, or wattles, If you have any good black or partridge you may want to try that to get better chicks.

That said.. He is very pretty and obviously a loved pet.. thats really all that matters is that you like him.. please don't take our comments to heart in that respect.

Hennypen----Vaulted skulls ? The crest you see on silkies today come from crossing them in with better crested birds (ex. polish) It is thought a chick hatched with a vaulted skull would , have a bigger crest . ( myself I have a high percentage of vaulted -- but also have some that are not and can honestly say in some I haven't seen a difference . But the ma jority I do find vaulted has a much fuller richer higher crest . Really it's a breeders choice . I don't show at this time but have attended many shows and found judges vary in their likes and dislikes .
now as far as your other question really I'm not possitive but would venture a thought that maybe your chick is a throw back from the smooth lav. gene ?? this is a very new color and has a lot of quirks -- so maybe .

Sonoran could answer your questions hennypen -- Although I haven't seen her on lately hope everything is alright . Maybe she's out winning some shows .

I saw some info on something that happens in Frankfort I'm not sure what it was now. I also saw something else in central KY but grr don't remember what it was either or what time of year it happens. lol
It just dawned on me today that while I'm there I should try and go to something chicken related since not a whole lot happens around me. Working with someone to organize a swap or something around southern new mexico/west texas but we haven't gotten very far in the planning yet. Hard to figure how to even get started with the whole thing...

If you want folks from other states, have it in New Mexico, not Texas. Texas does not allow birds in from other areas without jumping through huge hoops.​
